Neffy 10" foam top experiment

Post by Neff »

This was / continues to be an experiment in size, durability, and weight, a design triangle that must be reckoned with. Here I am trying to bring the size way up and the weight way down without bringing durability to an unacceptable level. Also time was a factor, I chose some shortcuts and overall treated this as a proof of concept. Pictures will explain much.

I've abandoned the traditional crown shape since I prefer to snap (roll?) start anything bigger than 3" diameter. It can still be boomeranged without a crown of course.

More to add later, just wanted to get the pictures up

Nice! Pushing the design envelope!

How does it play? Are you going to bring it to worlds? ;)
Durability might be a concern. But that also depends of who is playing it ::)

Obviously can't comment about the top itself, but with foam, I think your biggest problem will be it degrading (getting little pieces torn off) rather than it outright breaking.

Have you consider maybe wrapping it with thin plastic (like an acetate) or thin fabric (like ribbons; that might look nice, too)?

The blue foam is covered with a black latex paint, then black truck bed lining. I wanted to do the PET plastic heat shrink over the whole thing, but in a test the heat shrunk the foam as well (no surprise). I wanted to fiberglass it, but the resin melts the foam. Rubber is a terrible surface for a top but I bought some truck bed lining to try, not intended at the final coat but as a substrate layer. Truck bed lining is xylene based that melts foam too, but the latex paint sealed it enough for it to work. It's pretty durable, but if it were to land sideways on the corner of something, it would definately bruise.

With the truck bed liner layer on, I intend to try fiberglass or heat shrink, but there are other problems and I may start over with a different top. Something is moving or shifting, I can't get it balanced. I hate that.

I need to re-do the tip; the angle between the chin and shoulder needs to be much more acute. it is hard to regen right now. The ruberry truck lining was easy to apply but rubber is an awful material for tops, it grabs everything and kills your spin dead.

I will bring it to worlds!

Isn't this something like what you made for a top that was part of a raffle on this forum? And Don Olney won it? And he sent it to Miamisburg for one of our festivals?

Interesting to compare the two, Mike! Nimbus is made of PVC planks. The blue foam here is 2" thick rigid foam building insulation, a much lighter material. This 10" diameter top weighs 2.21 lbs, or 1.002 kg. Nimbus is a 7" diameter top, and weighs 1.6 lbs, or .717 kg. Nimbus has a delrin one-way-bearing assembly at the bottom that is kinda heavy, the 10" top has a 1" thick weight ring on top that is kinda heavy.

Hayward's orange 10" top (Chubby?) is 2.5kg.

Dear Chris,

Haha, A brilliant Idea! You beat me to it! I was just thinking about using cardboard, lol. I will play around with this idea as well. I can't wait to see videos of it!

Thank you,

I love it. The only way to find out is to make it. I want to make a little Rosie. I'm going with Pine and a 8.0 diamenter at two pounds I hope. Big Rosie needs 3/8 x 15 feet to do the tricks. That kills me. I'm still waiting for my Grandson or Bryan to make it SHINE. GOOD LUCK.
