New spin time records by hand and spinner!

Post by Jeremy McCreary »

The 2 main things limiting spin times in LEGO tops are their aerodynamics and low average densities (usually well below that of water).

Recently, I broke the 3-minute barrier (192 sec or 3:12) with some low-CM tops based on one of the few LEGO parts with a metal weight inside -- the Spinjitzu turntable. (Post here.)

Now I'm up to 212 sec (3:32) by hand and 272 sec (4:32) by manual spin-up tool with the "Spinjitzu burger tops" below. The trick was to up the attack on the density and aerodynamic fronts simultaneously by using 2 turntables mounted liked buns on a burger. This allowed me to take full advantage of the smooth rocker bottoms found on some turntables.

Each burger packs ~68 g worth of mass into a maximum diameter of only 47 mm. Some of them look pretty cool under blacklight, too.

Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time ... and with spinning tops, we decorate both.

You make great videos. The music matches very well, but at 2x it loses some of the ambiance ;)

I bet that last top I can throw it with a string, specially if you shorten the stem. I probably can even boomerang it. >:D

Very kind, ta0! I recently tumbled to an unexpected advantage of setting top videos to electronic dance music: The lack of human variation in tempo makes it useful as a metronome. For example, you can use the kick drum in the video above to determine whether the precession rates are constant, speeding up, or slowing down.

I have no doubt that if anyone could throw my tops successfully, it'd be you. But you'd better glue them together first. For example, the white cone serving as stem holder in that last top would surely come off before you even got the string wound.

Ha! Good one, jim. From some of the videos I've seen (e.g , with johnm's 7" Fiery), I'd say downright brutal!
