New Chico spintop

Post by ta0 »

Thad sent me these picture of their new CYYY spintop:

The only thing I know is that they are made of one-piece delrin and that the tip is made of hardened steel. The name has not been decided but I hear it will probably be the name of an African ungulate.

The somewhat tear-drop shaped body looks gorgeous in my opinion. I like that the tip is of substantial size. What I am not convinced about is the flat surface on the chin of the tip:

Richy put one in the mail today for me to test ;D After I get it I will post a review.

Now that’s exciting! :o
Can’t wait to read your review Jorge.

Looks like top spinning is off to a good start this year 8) with Maurizio doing another run of Giuliia’s; Trompo Space introducing Pegasus and NOW CYYC’s great looking new top! ;D

Nice looking top. I love delrin. Is the top being made on a C.N.C lathe? And is the tip being ground? It looks like the size of a Duncan.

Hi Cecil,
Both the top and the tip are made on a CNC lathe

It is a nice looking top. In the third picture there appears to be threads (or at least grooves) on the inner diameter of the crown on the black version. I cannot distinguish them on the white version in the fourth picture, so it may be some kind of illusion but it is fun to think about possibilities for a thread in the crown. For example a double tip feature or a screw-in tip locker or a screw on key ring carrying cap.

The flat edge on the tip may require more careful efforts for release tricks but I think for a bearing top, that large shelf will be fantastic for tricks like Neff's Wormhole (link = Wormhole thread) and it may lead to other poi-like and tangler-esque tricks. At least it should allow us mortals to reduce the number of times we launch tops into our faces before giving up. ::)

Great observation John !
The reason there are threads in the top is because we
made a tool that went through the whole top ( from the top thru the bottom )for the last
operation to make sure the top came out perfectly balanced. We also thought like you said,
people can mod the top by adding a spike on the top , a custom button , or anything you like. ;D ;D ;D
RFC
ps thread size is one and a quarter x 18

You can see the threads on this white top:

The metal tops are two of just three that the CYYC honchos (Thad, Bob and Richy) made for themselves. I am told they weigh a hefty 197 grams! I guess Bob's will be on display at the Yo-yo museum.

It seems I am not the first one to review the top:

;D (if you go to nats in Chico, a tour of Richy's home museum is a must.)

I was thinking about melting the black and white chips together for a zebra delrin top.
