A new video from Tim showing a collection of tops he got in Germany (perhaps from www.kreiselparadies.de ?)

More tops from Tim

Post by Jeremy McCreary »

Tim's been showing a lot of tops lately...

Here, he features the "Non Toppling Top" first discussed here on this forum and still sold as the Balancing Taorenado on Spingear.

These look like a lot of fun. I've made LEGO tops with similar behavior. They just don't stay up as long. (It's all about dialing in the right CM height and TMI/AMI ratio with the right ball tip. Tim states at 0:48 that a "physics friend" told him that the top's resistance to being knocked over is due to a "very low center of gravity". But my experiments show otherwise. Too low or too high a center of gravity, and you don't get this behavior.)

And from the 2020 Nuremburg Toy Fair, first a spindulum featuring a hanging, spinning globe. Then some interesting true tops...

Enjoy!

EDIT: I hadn't seen that Jeremy had already posted the 2020 Nuremburg Toy Fair video, so I am now merging it with this.
==============

Surprisingly, I got the first three! :o
Somebody who came from Germany gave me the earth top years ago. I don't have the sun to hang it from, but it works well as a regular top.
The second is the Sakura top that Spingear sells. I love it.
The blow top I got thanks to Renee's review :)

PS: A post on the channel says that due to the corona virus Tim will stay home and not film videos for a while.

Think I'll leave a comment on that video telling Tim how much we enjoy his videos. And to keep the tops coming -- once it's safe.

PS: Message I left for Tim...
You have a lot of fans on the International Top Spinners Association forum (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php). Really appreciate the time you devote to our favorite toy. Stay safe.

Great idea Jeremy!

I didn't ask Ludo or Jim how far went their attempt to invite Tim to Marines. But I surely would like to meet him one day.
I have been following him since just before I started collecting tops, in 1998:

There was never a Vol. 2, but then youtube was created (well, 7 years later!).

Another from Tim about tops:

The Topnosis we have discussed several times. But I don't recall hearing about a giant board with a team doing the regens.\

I would like to have the mirrored base at the end!

You and me both! Wish he'd shown the (reflected) laser light show put on by the faceted mirrored tops.

Man, Tim really pushed all my buttons this time. Love the tip sounds you get with rolling regeneration on resonant surfaces and happy to hear that Tim appreciates them, too.

Have made many different centrifugal tops with loose bits inside. Remarkable how well they self-balance at speed. The one below contains high-precision silicon nitride ball bearings, but fish-shaped bits self-balance even more effectively. Never thought to combine such tops with rolling regeneration as Tim did here.

And of course, he totally had me with the comment about the eccentric hemisphere tops at 6:22: "So for students studying the dynamics of spinning objects, this is quite exceptional." I'll say! Already scheming to make a LEGO knock-off.

This top gyro is now available from Grand Illusions:

The shape is somewhat original, as is the base made by 3 ball bearings. But I think it has too much rim weight that is not spun at the start.

Sold! Kind of an upscale wizzzer, beautifully executed. And the clever bearing base adds some interesting new play modes.

PS: Just ordered one. $118 shipped. Boy, am I in trouble!

Congrats!
Just tell your wife that it's to treat covid isolation. It's way cheaper than therapy! ;D
I look forward to your review.

First impressions...
1. Decent play value.
2. Well made.
3. Very heavy.
4. Decent bearing separating this coax top into two rotors with stem fixed to the lower-inertia rotor and tip to the other.
5. Still looking for the best surface to roll the tip on. Spinning up its rotor that way harder than expected.

One of the loose bearings in the base just vanished when I dropped it while unwrapping. Beginning to think the dog ate it.

Update: Ha! Roxie did snatch up the bearing! Luckily, she spit it out in the next room.

Top spins with a very slight wobble on the counter but an annoying rapid wobble on the base. Since self-righting is weak on the counter but strong on the base, I'm not getting
the stately wobble-free precessions seen in the video.

Overall, I'd say worth at most half the price.

This is a nice gyro ! Could you explain what parts are the "counter" and the "base" ?
