what is it ?
hi all
I have found this piece of metal in the street
i wonder what it is :
diametre 28mm
height 40mm
weight 410 grams !
flat surface
no mark of screw
made of steel with a logo on top, a number and the letters FD
have you got any idea what it could be ?
there was some heavy road works in this street so maybe a piece of machinery?

Re: what is it ?
Has it something written in the logo? The engraved numbers seem to be old,It has woken my curiosity up.

Re: what is it ?
11 inch dia and 15 inch high, made of metal, but only weighs 1 pound just sounds too light?????????????
Practice hard and play safe.

He wrote mm not cm.Dick Stohr wrote: 11 inch dia and 15 inch high, made of metal, but only weighs 1 pound just sounds too light?????????????
Actually that is very heavy. Are you sure of that weight?
I get a density of 17 gr/cm3 Like a tungsten alloy! Hopefully it is not uranium!

If your measurements are right it is an expensive piece of metal!

Re: what is it ?
some kind of calibration block is my best guess
ill keep looking. can you take a close up of the logo in the centre? seeing the words would be helpful

Re: what is it ?
maybe an ASTM block? looks a bit too beat up for that kind of thing though

Ooops! OK 1.1 in dia x 1.5 in hi at just under 1 pound yes, that is pretty heavy! Still I have no idea. F.D = Fire Dept?????????

Re: what is it ?
hi all
here is a better view
the letters are still barely visible
after using a thin paper and pencil i obtained a print
at the top it reads AERO with a mirror view
on the left it starts with HY mirror from the bottom
on the right i don't know
about the weight on another scale it reads 408 grams
conclusion : it could be a piece of aircraft
if someone knows how to research a photo from a model
please do it
thanx

Re: what is it ?
These are the heaviest metals:
MetalDensity (gr/cm3)
Iridium22.650
Osmium22.610
Platinum21.400
Plutonium19.816
Tungsten19.600
Gold19.320
Uranium18.900
Mercury13.593
Generally they will not be pure and will be alloyed and somewhat lighter.
Yours has a density of 16.7 gr/cm3. We can discard gold by the color.
Very intriguing!

Re: what is it ?
ive seen antique plumbobs that have a center chamber filled with murcury. is that a possibility here with this thing you think?ta0 wrote: These are the heaviest metals:

hello jorge
i could send you the piece ..., but i'm off to ajaccio tomorrow
i'll take the intriguing thing on board : maybe it will trigger the security system :--)

Something that dense WILL show on the X-ray systems like uranium! In fact, it could be depleted (hopefully) uranium (in which case it can also trigger the radiation detectors), although I would expect it to be darker!
Do NOT take it through security!!!
If it is not radioactive I would love to have it. But it can pretty valuable so you should keep it.

Re: what is it ?
Well, I don't want to scare you too much
It is most likely a tungsten alloy. Not dangerous and not very expensive as the rest, but still a very unusual find.
