Photo of 1947 trapeze

Post by ta0 »

This press photo from 1947 is in an ebay auction (www.ebay.com/itm/400731512912):

The man, Jim Mangan, is one of the three spinners on the 1945 Life article. But on this photo he is clearly using a Siren King to do the trapeze.
On the back of the image he is called World Champion Top Spinner. :D
I agree with what he said: "More people should spin their tops instead of blowing them."

Magan was from Chicago and he was an industrial designer. The Siren King was made by King Scientific Co. from Chicago. The tip on this top is quite nice for tricking. I wonder if Magan designed the top himself? Perhaps he worked for King Scientific. Or he may have seen the B19 model and contacted them with a better design?

He looks quite formal for top spinning action. It doesn't take much for me to get warm so the first thing I think about is how that outfit would probably make me hot. On the other hand, maybe it is winter in Chicago and that suit feels pretty good. Still, I would be struggling with the tie and the pen. The tie would constantly pop out and be flapping around on me. And who knows how many times that pen would fall out and be flying to the floor.

Even though I don't dress like that for top spinning, I like the picture. It is representative of a different era and a time where he would have been a pioneer in top spinning.

excellent find ta0 :o the thing that strikes me most, aside from how constricting a suit would be, is look at how fat that string is!!!! :o

On the photo you can see that he is using a B19 metal button. I generally don't buy images on ebay but I got this one: it is too good!

Are top spinners a little lose at the top? Are we a little weird? Magan certainly was! From the Wikipedia entry:
James T. Mangan (1896–1970) was a famous eccentric, public relations man and best-selling author on self-help topics who publicly claimed ownership of outer space in 1948.

Mangan founded what he called the Nation of Celestial Space and registered it with the Recorder of Deeds and Titles of Cook County, Illinois, on January 1, 1949.[1] Eventually, the Nation claimed 100,000 members and in 1958, Mangan applied for membership in the United Nations and erected a flag outside the UN Building in New York City before millions of television viewers. He consistently and stubbornly insisted that Celestia - his nickname for the Nation of Celestial Space - was a legal and valid micronation, going so far as to issue passports to astronauts and protest the incursions of satellites on his domain.[2]

In his book The Secret of Perfect Living,[3] Mangan created a psychological system slightly resembling transcendental meditation, in which readers were encouraged to engage their subconscious minds and obtain specific mental states by focusing their attention on mantra-like one-word affirmations called switchwords; for example, focusing on "GIGGLE" would be useful "to get in mood for writing."[4]
I found about this because there are 4 more press photos of James Magan on Ebay from the 50's related to his extraterrestial real state venture (1, 2, 3, 4). Fortunately, he also developed a spherical spaceship that could travel at the speed of light :o :

The address listed, 141 W Jackson Blvd, is right in the financial district, so he invested quite a bit on this venture.
I wonder if in "The Secret of Perfect Living" he mentions top spinning ;) Another book he wrote was "The Knack of Selling Yourself" ;D

I checked the address of King Scientific in the boxes and literature I have: 209 W Jackson.
That is just one block away from Mangan address. Could it be that King Scientific and Jim Mangan are the same? :-\

Made contact with a grandson of Jim! :)
What a nice surprise! Yes, Jim Mangan is my grandfather.

I'll check with my mother, Ruth Mangan, and let you know.

Happy Independence Day!

That top sold for 15 cents at the Oak Hills Bible Camp in 1948. I have one in my collection that my brother bought then from Jim Schreiber. Jim called it the singing top.
