All of the yo-yo stuff is really current, updated and cool-looking. All the spin top stuff, like you said, has to be dug for, and it's all old.
...
..if you just YouTube search "spintop freestyle" you'll be rewarded with plenty of footage of past contests.
Now, do not backpedal too far! You definitely have a point there. For me it is not about old/new, current/ancient, cool looking/boring.
For me it is important that the videos help me advance with my playing. So watching footage of past contest and videos of fantastic players doing seemingly impossible tricks is very entertaining and inspiring, but often not very helpful in learning specific tricks or skills.
Then there are some videos that include even some slow motion parts - only seldom helpful to me.
Some "teaching" videos are in Spanish or Japanese, still helpful to some extend.
Some people started with teaching lists of videos, but often those are too advanced for me or they stopped before there really was a structure to the trick list.
On the other hand for yo-yo tricks I found this site:
yoyotricks.comMaybe the stuff there can look so professional because they also have some commercial interest, but learning with those videos I found really helpful.
-they show a trick
-they usually also show it in slow motion
-they explain the prerequisites
-they explain what can go wrong and how to correct it
-provide structured lists
But I should not be whining around here! There are so many helpful people here in the forum and quite a few times already they made videos I asked for.
Plus it seems there is enough material to learn from, if you are talented: I hear Texture reached a very high level of play just by practicing by himself and watching videos before he ever saw someone throw a top in person - and I did not read him complaining as myself.
