michael cullen in france
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:43:38 PM »

hi all
just to tell you that the woodturner michael cullen from california
will be host in france for a 5 week "artistic residence" in april-may
it's a long tradition to invite a "master" in his field to transmit some of his knowledge....as you may know michael cullen is the author of the book
" Tops , making the universal toy" in which he explains and demonstrates how to make 10 spintops with a lathe and some tools
excellent photos and sound explanations if you can get a copy , it's worth it !!

the "residence" will take place in the "charente" region (center-west of france)
i plan to take a weekend off just for the fun of meeting him

I met Michael Cullen here in CA, at a local wood turners demonstration.  The local club had asked me to do a demo with throw tops.  I had the chance to chat with Michael and show him my stuff along with the spin-tops that I had brought along with me, including a few that Alan Gray had made.  He was very impressed with the tricks and the tops,  as he is mainly familiar with finger tops.  He let me keep one of the three tops he turned in the demo and gave the other two to the wood turners club.  Great guy, great experience!  Hope you get the chance to meet him Jim.

Wow Jim!!!  You always seem to have all the excitement!  I'm happy for you and a
little jealous, too.

I can't wait to hear your comments and thoughts about your time with him.

I had to check that I had the Cullens book in my library. Yup, pretty nice tops.
