Duncan Rip Hollow Cord
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:26:39 PM »

I have seen this mod several times on this forum and I wanted to try it.
I still prefer my Gladiator over the Modified Rip Cord, but it plays good.Maybe when I learn how to do regenerations I might change my mind, I'm working on it.

Now the turning bug bite me, now I want a real lathe, and also a real wooden hollow top, and a Delrin .....and....and.... too many things...too many things...

you cheated, you did it the smart way!
man i spent an hour messing around with a cap this morning.
usually i use a file and sandpaper to smooth the sides of the body down too,
just to get it a bit lighter, for me it makes it easier to control.
looks good!

@ MatiasStuntMan :Holy cow! That's a very fast way of doing it. i did it with the whole ripcord fixed to my drill (popped out the tip and replaced it with a large bolt & nut during the process thou). You can add some weight rings in the ripcord to give it more weight and spin time.  i have 2 rubber weigh rings in mine (1 is slightly smaller in size, the 2 gets pressed tight together when i put the crown back on, so there's no problem of weight rings shifting out of place in mid play). Try it.  ;)

@Yocephus : i know what you mean, it took me an hour or so too to get the crown hollow out! :'(

A warm welcome to the "I drill holes in Rip Cord caps" Club!

I laughed the same way when my worked  ;D

I like to leave my crown high, like Trevor, just so I don't have to pay attention when I'm winding the string.  I epoxied it before I drilled it (again like Trevor) but the epoxy worked its way out in the later stages (not like Trevor).  I also reduced the diameter so that the Imperial ring would fit on it, just to see if I could - I generally only use rings on bearing tops.  I do like the slick look of the low profile crown, though.

Nice job with common tools--I like it!  The step drill (Unibit) is a very handy tool and you've nicely demonstated how well it can work on things which normally might grab an ordinary drill bit like the groove and triangle pocket of the Ripcord.  Also nice idea for a simple holding jig by using the knock out from the hole saw.

I like it!!!  Thanks for the vid.  John and I were just talking about this mod earlier this week.  After seeing it done, I think I'll have to try.
