String snags!
« on: June 03, 2018, 10:44:24 PM »

I've recently begun having trouble with frequent string snags, and I don't know why.

I don't think it can be the top or the string, as it happens with more than one, and with equipment that has always been fine before.

I can't believe it could be a problem with the wrapping of the top, as I have been doing so for years, and have done it literally thousands of times.  Why would wrapping suddenly be an issue now?

The snags happen most often during a trapeze throw, which is relatively new to me, but also occasionally during boomerang throws, which are definitely not.

What are the most common causes of string snags?  I need to get this figured out, as the problem is undermining my confidence in my play and my abilities.  I want to improve, not get worse!   :-[  Any ideas?

If the string gets dirty or fuzzy. Mabey humidity. This is usually what gives me issue.

You might have started to pull too early. Force yourself to pull back later.

hello again

don't worry : it happens from time to time
whatever the conditions (sweat, humidity, booze, bad mood, people watching)

if it persists , you could start again from the basic moves :
arm, forearm, wrist, must stay straight , in the same plane
no twisting, pull back as late as possible

Thanks, guys.  I wonder whether that could be it?  That I've started my pull-back too early?  I'll try to concentrate on that...m

Since the problem started out of the blue, so to speak, your string may have come to the attention of pesky aliens who enjoy messing with Earthlings from orbit. If you pretend you like it, they may mess with  someone else.  :o

That could be!   ;D

Also, thinking about my strings, I washed some of them not long before this problem started.  Could this have any impact on string snags?

Happens to me every once in awhile. Play with string length, tension, pullback. First thing I'd do would be try a brand new string. Make sure no ones watching, that sounds insane I know, but just try it where no one can see you

Mailman last week I tried using my old Ripcord and EVERY time I pulled back for a boomerang it felt like the knot caught on part of the top and if I kept pulling it would have flung into a window. Is that what is happening to you? As for me, I can't figure out what is causing it. Only happens with that one top so I don't think it is my string.

Yes, it sounds like you're experiencing string snag, too, but under different circumstances....

When you said "washed the string" that got my attention.  I quit washing mine and went straight to new string after I had some bad experiences with snagging after a washed string session.

Thinking back on it now, I think these problems began after the string washing.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think so.

I'm switching to new string immediately, and will see what happens....

In the past, Rachel had issues with string snags and top tumbling with certain tops.  It took long time of me watching her throw to figure  out what was happening.  She was letting go of the top before the throw was complete.
