Latest Wooden Spinning Tops - Non Precision - Just for Fun!
« on: February 01, 2018, 05:18:03 PM »

Hi all! I've been busy doing all sorts of nonsense that I haven't had a chance to work on any tops! Still learning how to properly balance my precision type finger tops ... I use that word "precision" loosely in reference to my bearing ball tops ... so in the meantime, for fun, here is my latest turnings:

The last one has very nice effect and color !  Did you use a rose engine lathe to make it ?
I was looking at the top with white rays; did you paint them, or you used centrifugal force ?

Hey Bob I dig the top in the bottom picture. I like the chatter marks on it. At least they look like chatter.  And if they are chatter marks what are you using? I've been thinking about trying it out on some of my tops. Been thinking I'll take a grinder to a butter knife to thin it out a bit and see what happens.

All look like a lot of fun, but the last one's truly elegant.

I just use my standard lathe to make them. For the colour I use artist markers and for the rays I use a paint pen. The paint pens dry quickly so as you mentioned I do use centrifugal force!

Nice work.  Lots of fun colors, too!
Thanks, they are a lot of fun to make ... and test!

It is chatter marks and in this case I moved the tool rest as far back as I could and used a small spindle gouge. I want to use butter knives but my wife insists I go to the second hand store and get my own ...

"elegant" ... i'm blushing! Thank you for such high praise!
