Wizard's Gyro: mind over matter
« on: January 18, 2010, 10:18:13 AM »

This trick is a new step towards total control of mind over matter . . .  8)
Gyroscopic Twist or Gyro-Twist for short Wizard's Gyro is its name.
Be mesmerized!  ;)

EDIT: Re-uploaded it to youtube (still the original low resolution version)

To tell you the truth, even to me it looks like (dark) magic   8)

I had the idea for the trick while writing the explanation for gyroscopic flop last week (thanks Chris!). Once more this proves that by teaching you can learn as much as your students.

I am surprised that the reversal of the precession works so well. The stall was a surprise because I knew that if you don't allow a gyro to precess it will fall. Only after I got it I realized that it is the easiest part of the trick to explain because it doesn't depend on gyroscopic effects.

It is in principle a very simple trick to do: just pull the string! Anybody could have created it. But at the same time it is pretty amazing to me. I named it gyro-twist to match its twin, gyro-flop. But perhaps it is a somewhat lame name for it. If braintwister was not already an unrelated yo-yo trick, I would consider it. Wizard's gyro? Now, if I could only get rid of the string . . . ;D

I wanted to have your dyed S8/STB (what is the official name?) appear for the first time on a special video and it was great for this trick as it spins for a long time.  As anybody can see it is very obedient and it almost seems to read my mind  ;)

I am leaning towards changing the name of the trick to Wizard's Gyro, unless I receive a better suggestion.

wonderful trick. i don't know much about witches and warlocks or wizards, but with all the
flip-flops and reversals, it seems more political than magical. should be a good name in there somewhere but
i'm too beat to think of one.
that top is beautiful in action! looks like raspberry sherbet.

Reminds me of:

AERIAL TISSU
Aerial tissu is an awe-inspiring, aerial ballet performed on a fragile piece of fabric suspended 13 meters in the air demonstrating a perfect balance of strength and flexibility. These unique, ethereal acts developed on Aerial Tissu (French, for "fabric"), also known as Aerial Tissue, Aerial Dance, Aerial Contortion, Aerial Silk or Aerial Curtain have been gaining recent notariety from performances in shows like Cirque du Soleil.

The Aerial Tissu reminds me of another trick we discussed recently: Pole Dancing! It looks like a combination of the Voladores de Paplanta and a "teibolera"  ;)

I would love to be able to coach that Aerial Tissu gal in the pole vault.  Did you see the muscles in her back and arms?  Actually, it would be good work for our pole vaulters to do some of those moves!!!

Jorge, I love your Gyro-Twist video.  Your glares and stares are terrific......and hilarious!

PS....congrats on your 700th post

I loved that video as well... really nice trick, and quite funny as well.  Thanks for the smile  :)

Congratulations on a great trick and even greater presentation. It's hard to imagine a more graphic demonstration of dueling vectors! I hope our friends in the Physics Department at UC are taking note.

By way of a name, my vote goes to "Wizard."

Thanks everybody. It was fun doing it.

Jeff, I was thinking the same, it could be a good question for a physics class: explain how Wizard's Gyro works  ??? And yes, I changed the name  ;)

Now I am working on a related trick. However, for this one the theory says it shouldn't work! But by cheating just a little on the form it seems it can be made to look smooth enough  8)

Awesome! I like the way you stared at the top to "make" it stop.
Haha. We should call you Merlin ta0.

I hope our friends in the Physics Department at UC are taking note.

Duelly noted!

The head motions suggest that this voodoo could be thrown long distances.  Perhaps in competition it could be used to disrupt the competition or to intimidate the judges. :o

Now, if I could only get rid of the string . . . ;D

Have you tested clear fishing line to at least conceal the string a little more?
