The shape of the Hornet is based on an old Spintastics top, the Hollow Point (HP), which is the top I used.

The HP came without a crown and was made with thick aluminum walls. I added a crown using the upper part of another old top (a Bulldog from YoyoJam)
and also made custom tips for them. The main difference with the Hornet is that it is heavier and has grooves on the body.

Here are six HP tops. Five have the Bulldog crown. One has a Sidewinder top inside to do the double top trick. Two of the tops have the original thick tip but I changed them a long time ago.

Here is a comparison with the Giulia and the Quicksilver hybrid:

The Quicksilver hybrid is an excellent top, specially with a diabolo tip. The diabolo tips you can buy are not perfect but are better than the original thick tip.

ta0: Asked this of Jack and now you: For someone with your acrobatic skills, what are the relative pros and cons of this traditional rotor shape vs. the wider and flatter chonkake rotor?

I guess by rotor you refer to what we generally call body. It depends of many things and what you are trying to accomplish.
For example, YYF came up with two tops a few years ago, the Throwback and the Acrobat. The Throwback spun longer and was more stable what was in principle a good thing, but many players preferred the Acrobat for freestyling because it was more lively and responded faster to maneuvers (e.g. making it lean).
A body that is very wide can interfere with the string and a short body can be more difficult to lasso. On the other hand, the chonkake with its shape and size is much easier to regen than a conventional western top.
