First Turned Spin Top
« on: November 16, 2015, 02:12:23 AM »

Haven't been on boards for a while, but wanted to share some pics of my first go at turning a spin top!  Really surprised myself!  It has a few flaws, but I learned a lot and can't wait to chuck up another piece of wood.  And it spins!  This one is cherry.

Nice! Really like the 2 piece design. I have just
Purchased a lathe and tools. All I need now is some free
Time to start turning.

If this is your first attempt (!) you are bound
To make some spectacular tops in the future.

Thanks for sharing.

VERY WELL DONE!!!!!!  If you learned to match lids and boxes on your first try you learned a lot and very well. You will enjoy the turning what ever you do.

Thanks all!  I did a very little bit of turning about 20 years ago on a borrowed Bonnie Klein micro lathe including some pen kits and a small lidded box.  I've had my current lathe for a year or two, but can't say we've seen eye-to-eye up until now.  It has spent a lot of hours in "time out" while I've studied YouTube videos to try and figure out how to get it to behave.  I was about ready to throw in the towel after snapping so many spindles in half.  I wouldn't say turning is like riding a bike...I felt like a total beginner (actually, it seemed much easier 20 years ago!).

Since I got this lathe, I've made a couple of finger tops that are spectacularly out of balance, two pens, a Russian-style spindle for spinning wool into yarn, and a bottle stopper that is shaped a lot like a spin top.  And a lot of saw dust that thought it was something else entirely until I proved it wrong. It is getting easier, though, and making the top was a blast. I felt like I was in the zone or something.  Anyway, I was inspired to buy the lathe by all the cool tops I saw here, so really excited to keep playing with it and really flattered by the compliments!

Very nice looking top. All the small tops I make I put in a Spintastic C tip. What kind of lathe did you buy? I would love to just go out in the back yard and make spin tops. I have been making tops for a few years now and I'm still learning and making mistakes. And it's fun. But bigger is better.

Hi Cecil!  I just ordered some tips from Turner Toys.  Not sure why I didn't think to check at Spintastic first.  They are less than half the price of Turner Toys for what look to be the same tips, so I'll be ordering there from now on.

My lathe is an Excelsior mini lathe from Rockler that I found on Craigslist.  Already considering upgrading to something a bit nice with variable speed.

I made three tips and I'm working on a couple of big tops. Tops are 4 1/2 dia. and tips are .600 dia.

Those are very nice combinations of wood and patterns, Cecil. You are getting really fancy!
Are you sure you want to fight with those?  :-\
