String Snags
« on: April 14, 2014, 11:44:19 PM »

Greetings,
I have started getting string snags.

This topic was covered here..
http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,3044.msg31394.html#msg31394

I am having a similar problem (but only sometimes) with Trompo Grandes.  I have launched the top into the side of car 30 feet away.
I wonder: if I have slowly changed my throw, if my string is wearing out, if I am just unlucky?
Several wild tops over the last 3 days has me jittery.
It never seems to happen with soft throws.

Thoughts and advice please.

I think that the first thing to check is how tight is the string wind on the top. When you finish the wind try to push the string from the crown toward the tip. If the wind is too loose the string will roll off of the top. If it is too loose when you throw it the top will come out of the wind as a missile not a spinning top.

This sounds very familiar.  It seemed to happen to me when my strings were getting old or dirty.  Maybe try some new string?  Sweaty hands that made my string wet on occasion caused some problems.

Also, without realizing it, sometimes I was tightening way too much on the first and second wraps around the tip.
