Corkscrews: A Personal Triumph
« on: October 23, 2009, 04:05:41 PM »

I was happy today after succeeding in a six wrap corkscrew.

Though I have a question.  How long a of a string does everyone else use when they attempt more?  I seem to be stringless after six wraps.

technically there is no limit to the length. i suppose you could use 2 different strings - one for the boomerang and another long one for the corkscrews - and switch after the throw. or, you could just use the long string and just wrap your top with the correct number of wraps/length and pinch the string with the excess hanging off your throw hand. i tried the latter with a 12 foot string and i could boomerang with ease but it was difficult to do the wraps neatly and quickly. i just bit off more than i could chew. an 8 foot string works better, but i'm unable to get more than 7 or eight revolutions. not for lack of string but lack of skill.  :-[
you'll just have to experiment to see what works for you.

I have used a 10 foot string, using the full length to throw the top and then wrap around my arm. I won't say my record because I don't want to give anyone any ideas but you can get at least ten wraps with this length string.

Congrats hemingsoft! If you can do six you are an expert with the trick.

For my "official" record of 11 at last worlds I used a 9ft 4" (2.84 m) string. As Agentsac said, with longer strings making the wraps fast an neat gets pretty difficult. That will be the main difficulty in getting to 15 and beyond . . .

Good work, hemingsoft.  Six wraps is something to be proud of.  Personally, I might suggest just going for a little longer string to start with......so you can go for seven or eight before you head for Buechele-esk numbers.

Mike, didn't I get something like 14 at Worlds.....in the hallway before the contest?  I just remember that I lost my touch later on when the contest was held.  I was using a spool of string.

Yes, I clearly remember that run of 14 at worlds in '08.  You were amazing.  You were SpinQueenific!

Next year we will make sure we have a wine bottle with a cork to open with the corkscrew trophy and cheer. This year Tom was very nice in providing the bottle . . . but it turned out it had a plastic cap. Of course, that did not stop us for toasting to Jim and Philippe  :)

I hope this will be enough motivation to challenge my world record next year and make it interesting  ;)

(Yes, I know, I still need to make a video of the corkscrew challenge . . .)

Hi Tom! Great to see you here! I know it is difficult to get computer time with your daughter Ann clinging to the keyboard.

Thanks a lot for providing the celebratory wine: it was a great touch! And don't worry about the picture, Chris provided me with the one I needed for the video.

Yes, indeed.  Welcome Tom!!!  We need your input here on the forum.  At worlds, wherever you went with your big tops the place would stop and watch what you were doing.  I got a big kick out of observing the kids from
Japan and Taiwan watching you very closely!
