I got the first prototype a couple of weeks ago, and it is not perfect. A buddy of mine who teaches Industrial Design printed it for me and I didn't realize that it wasn't going to be plastic. It's a plaster/gypsum compound that is held together with resin, and it is heavy. It weighs a pound more than it would have if it were made of plastic. There seems to be a bit of a balance problem too. It might be fixable, but the bigger problem is that since it was printed in the wrong material, I can't fully tell if the connection system works. I have some more work to do to fix it, and I'll keep you all posted on it. Today with Mike was the first time it had been thrown and caught in the hand. Plus, Mike did some regenerations too. The way I made the tip means that it unscrews when lefties regenerate, so I have to get a reverse thread tap so I can actually use it in fixed-tip mode.

Yeah, and if you have ever worked with plaster you might know that it is SUPER abrasive. I keep getting patches of skin scraped off when I mess with the Decapitop. I guess I should have known it would be dangerous from the name. ;)

:o Can we see a photo of the prototype?

If you do not break it, that proto will one day be a prized possession of some museum (or hall of fame)  ;)  I cannot wait for the plastic version!

Mike Hout, Mark and the Decapitop by markhayward534, on Flickr

The tip is temporary. I made it out of material that I had lying around, so it is too small, but good enough for tests. You may notice that the halves are duct-taped together. Yep. That's right, duct tape. It seems as if both halves were printed a little small, so the o-ring doesn't fit in the groove yet. I will have to fix that on the lathe before the next tests.

A little bit of top trivia from that picture.  The tree behind Mark's head is the one that the lightning hit, which went to the antenna of my car which blew out my engine.  Inside the car was the famous corkscrew trophy.  Not too many world championship trophies have been touched by lightning!!!

That is great size for a top: very visible and playable.

The lightning-struck corkscrew trophy it is at my place (Omar and I tied last year) and will be again at play at Worlds in August. Another reason to come  ;)

The short answer is that I don't know. This process of developing a new top has turned out to be way harder than I thought it would be, and it looks like we're going to have to redesign part of it. It's going to be a while, and it's going to be expensive, if I can even manage to put it in production. Unfortunately there is a real chance I'll only be able to make one or two of them.

It's a plaster/gypsum compound that is held together with resin, and it is heavy. It weighs a pound more than it would have if it were made of plastic.

What was the target weight expected in plastic?  (or what is the actual weight of the plaster top, since I've got a calculator?  ::) )

It was supposed to be around 2 pounds, but ended up more than 3. The primary problem is that the attachment system seems to not be strong enough to hold everything in place on the throw. To be sure though I have to widen the o-ring groove that was somehow printed too small. It'll probably be a few weeks before i can do much with it.
