"Trick" Dreidel
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:14:52 PM »

I was checking the website for Major League Dreidel to see if they had announced this year's competition (it says "info coming soon") when I got all excited by the ad for a "trick" dreidel: trickdreidel.com.  Unfortunately, the word trick in this case turned out to mean cheat>:D

It took me a second to realize why . . .

The dreidel game is played (rules) like in the put-and-take game with finger tops (teetotums). The four faces should be: nothing, put one, take half, take all.  But this dreidel has all the faces with the same character, gimel, that means take all: you always win!

But there are other "trick" teetotums that are more subtle.  This one currently on ebay:

can be secretly set to be loaded on any of the colors.  I have a similar one with the numbers 1 to 6.

Now, how would a real (string) tricking dreidel look?  Perhaps by having the upper stem to be a tip it could be accomplished.

I would just put a nail-type point on the bottom and wrap/throw it Colombian style.

Back in  the day, we once made a special order of a gross of dreidels with all Gimmel, so somewhere out there are 144 collectible dreidels from The Toycrafter!
