FAQ attention all new spinners
« on: July 24, 2012, 12:29:50 AM »

For History on this thread see "sky rocket problems"

It seem that there is general agreement that an FAQ is a good thing to add to the forum and/or ta0.com.  Since I have been spinning tops for only a few weeks (and love it) I thought that I would be well qualified to ask beginner questions.  Please chime in with your thoughts on Frequently Asked Questions (mostly for beginners)

Beginners Please add questions.
Experts please add answers.  Links to other sites are OK I think.

Here is my Start at such a list. (focusing on tops thrown with a string)

Where do I buy tops?
What is a good top for a beginner?  for an intermediate? wood vs. plastic
How do I wind and throw a top?
How long should the string be? How fat?
Where can I meet other top players?
I'm having problems with ____ trick.
When in search for tops on the internet I get all sorts of unrelated stuff (clothing, music, tennis, etc)  What are some good search terms?
Why are most of the links on most top web sites dead links?  (not a real FAQ entry, but I do wonder)
I want to make some tops. Are there plans?
I recently heard of Honduran top gambling. How do I avoid being hustled?
Mom says I'll mess up the kitchen floor playing tops. Is this true?
How do I balance a top?

It has been a while since I have searched for some things.  I am surprised to find that most top spinning links are dead!

Kirk - I started a getting started post over at the yo yo expert spin top section;

http://yoyoexpert.com/forums/index.php?topic=25361.0

I did not think ta0 would be interested, so I did not post it here.

Many questions you have listed are addressed there, but only by me.  I like your list, I will review it again for things to incorporate.

I just got my learn on. Thanks Neff. You are an excellent teacher, writer, and top craftsman. I sure do love the way the Punk plays. I get to play Ta0's sometimes. Last night I had a dream about owning my own. The sodatop is helping me see where corrections are necessary in my regenerating bastones. You're tops!  ;D
