Hollow Mercurio
« on: November 25, 2011, 11:46:06 AM »

Something I find very appealing about the new Mercurio from Trompo Space is that the light stainless steel body is great for snap starting. It just feels like a fat Rascal. It can be easily snap-started to a spin on the hand for several seconds before starting the regens. I did suggest to Javier than with the new logo he includes a friction ring to make the body less sleek for the fingers.

So I looked into ways of fastening the tip to the body without using the cap.

A compression spring, a washer and a screw (M4, although a 6/32 can also fasten) is all you need to keep the tip from popping out. But the pressure was not enough to stop the top from rotating so I tried instead a rubber washer (a faucet washer drilled with a 13/64 bit) that stays in place just by friction. I works great except that on hard falls is moves up on the tip shaft and I have to reposition it. I probably need to combine both ideas.

Yes, playing the top without the lid, like the old Hollow Point from Spintastics.

Eventually I will make a custom tip and on the inside I will put a smooth conical surface (maybe  with a bearing  8) ) for tricks like Pencil Sharpener.

Also, when you hit the open body, even with just the knot at the end of the string, it rings, what is a nice effect.

You need a little light inside that top  :P Anyway, you do a great job with it.

My plan now is to use a tube over the stem of the tip, plus a spring washer and a screw to hold it in place.
By the way, I use spring washers in all my Júpiters and now Mercurios to stop the internal adjustable ballast from becoming lose. I am surprised they don't come with them.

The video I did when I saw your post, to see Mercurio with the tip of S8, had no time and could not prepare well for the lighting, sorry.
I'll try that next video is better. :-[
