So I'm making this top...
« on: October 08, 2010, 12:32:59 AM »

About 1 kilogram, 6" diameter. 2" hollow bore. I've got a design involving four bearings for the tip... or maybe two angular contact bearings...

I've gotta see this thing up close - love the checkerboard effect!  Very organic shape, too.

I wont' use you're name in case you'd rather keep your anonymity, but for those that were at Nationals - this is the long blonde curly headed dude who made this  ;D

This is your first top?   :o

Thanks, guys! And Neff, it's fine, I'm Dylan Schink for those of you who don't know. I'm excited for next years nats, or worlds if I can make it, so I can show this thing off!

And yep, first top.

Looks great Dylan! Very nice fit and high quality wood.

One of my semi hollow big tops (Big Unit) was constructed in a similar manner. I used 3/4" boards to make octagon rings that were offset. The inside was not finished and the crown was closed. It was originally painted with "glow in the dark" paint.

Always wanted to make a big top with alternating light and dark woods in segmented rings. It should help with the balance of the wood.

If you could bore a 3/4" hole in the tip end, you could insert a bearing tip assembly that has 5/8" bearings and a 1/4" axle.

Was this a school project?

Possibly, I still need to find someone to make the tip ::)
But yes, this was a school project, in as much as when the school year started I was going to build a speaker cabinet but I had to special order the wood, so I made this while I'm waiting. Our wood shop teacher will basically let students make anything they want provided he approves it.

So, you glued together 4 layers of hexagons and then turned the whole thing?
It is such a sweet top! It is incredible that it is your first turning of a spintop.

That's exactly what I did, but I had a scrap wood base to screw the chuck onto.

Awesum work!  Wedge segments for the glue-up is pretty advanced--very impressive.  Would you share a list of the tools you used for the process so we can be jealous and expand our wish lists?

Our wood shop teacher will basically let students make anything they want provided he approves it.

Glad to hear there are still schools that have woodshop.  This teacher sounds great and your top is unbelievably cooler than the standard candle sconces that parents can't wait to throw away as soon as they think the student has forgotten they made a pair.
