R.O.B. the Robot
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:19:27 PM »

So I was perusing the internet a bit and came across a great NES accessory that I remember my friend having.

R.O.B. the Robot and his Gyromite game.

I completely forget the entire premise but maybe someone else remembers.

My brother had one of these.  I think it came as an option to some deluxe NES systems; the robot and tops were accompanied by a video game that required you to manipulate the robot to lift and transfer the "gyros".  The robot was activated from one of the two controllers while the other controller was inserted into the rectangular slot on the piece with the red and blue circular platforms.  A spinning top placed on a colored platform would weigh down the lever and depress a button on the attached controller.  If I recall correctly, the idea was to pick up and transfer the tops between the power spinner (The unit in the lower right of the picture) and the colored platforms depending on which button needed to be pressed--you had to keep 'em spinning.  It was supposed to be like the robot was your partner playing the other controller I guess.  I think the other black circular platforms behind the power spinner were to hold spinners when they were not needed.  Frankly, it all seemed kinda lame back in the day...Super Mario Bros. was king!

Many years ago my then new step son, Casey, got me to purchase this early "video" game for him because, he argued, it included spinning tops and thus had to be part of "our" top collection.  The set also included some sort of gun thing that would shoot some ducks on a screen I think??  I'm thinking somewhere around 1985?

Top spinning is great but what makes everything better?

ROBOTS!!!!

Anyways, I was continuing to look and found he makes an appearance in the Wii's Super Smash Bros Brawl.  I need to get this game and play.

Here are some pictures...

and a launch

I enjoy this youtube video also.  (He launches tops at his opponent at 15 seconds)

That's pretty amazing. Pablo has made me play a little with the Wii SSBB game but we had not encountered the spintop throwing robot, yet. I guess this time I am the one going to ask him to play . . .

Checked a little on ROB and Gyromite on ebay. I have not decided if I am going for it, but it is tempting.  But it seems ROB needs to look at the screen and recognize when things happen on the game and react accordingly. This only works with CRT TVs: it doesn't work with LCD or plasma (as there is no raster scan modulation).
