http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,4260.0.html

@Ludos was really helpful pointing kostas a Greek top maker, You can guess the rest...

Got a Giulia for Christmas!  Unfortunately it came with a rusted bearing (poor thing's been sitting in a warehouse for way too long).  Quick swap out and it's playing great!

Two. Quicksilver. Tops.

One fixed and One bearing. Both gifts at Christmas. One from a friend (totally unexpected and completely undeserved, BTW) The second from my family which I requested (and didn't really expect them to find). I've played the Qucksilver tops in Miamisburg over the last few years and never thought I'd own one. Now I have two - and I am a very lucky boy, indeed.

Very slick, Cecil! Thank you for taking the time to explain the tip / shaft modifications that you made.

Great mod work on that Taiwan top.

It was a very subdued Christmas for me as far as top acquisitions.  I did receive a surprise Santa top in the mail.  Thanks!!!  That was fun.  I also opened several containers of small plate Legos that make nice spinners.  Can one ever have enough Lego pieces?

Over the past few weeks I found a LOT of Christmas style tops in Don Olney's collection.  Each one seemed like a special Christmas present.  It was great, also, to finally figure out how to use them in more efficient ways......like adding them to the top spinning Christmas tree and also having a special Christmas section in the Hall of Fame.

The whirled of tops and the spinners on this board get me in a better Christmas spirit every year.  Thanks for your friendship and kind stories and fun gifts along the way.  I have learned in new ways how special it is to give and not always receive and so I continue on with our spinning work here in Miamisburg.

I was gifted a couple of tops, but this one I bought for myself from eBay.  The little animal figure  is about 3.75 inches tall, and comes apart into seven separate tops.

That's just tops, Rene!  >:D

Got nothing having to do with tops per se, but I did get 2 LEGO sets with lots of new parts -- some of which will no doubt end up in LEGO tops.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Thanks a lot, butterfingers!

I sent a few tops this year to folks who have been a significant part of my spin top life. If I hadn't met you at RIT a few years back I would not be spinning tops today...and if I had more addresses I would have sent a few more! It was a modest gift, but more fun to send than just a card. Best wishes for a happy 2019, Tao. Thank you for all you do for the top spinning community.

I couldn't resist, of course, and I played with it. It works very well.

It's scary that a top of this size that requires at least 5 injection molded cavities (and 2 or 3 different plastics), assembly with several screws, a battery, LED, centrifugal switch, can have a retail price in the US of less than $2.  :o

I, too, received a top for Christmas!  I was fortunate enough to be gifted a top that had been featured in another thread on this forum.    Do you remember the handmade Delrin top that has the beautiful blue hand-dyed pattern on the body that Jospin made?

It's mine!  It's mine!  My favorite Christmas gift this year!  Thanks, butterfingers!!

all my S8 have the OWB seat too big... I'll need to play around with venyl tape :(

I was the lucky recipient of a surprise package from Butterfingers.  He had posted a photo on the Rochester Juggling Club Facebook page of a wall of Monarc tops.  I was awed by the sheer quantity of them.  I particularly admired the more unusual pastel color tops, and commented on my two favorites.  Next thing I know, they're mine!  And, a couple of Ling Dong tops as well!

Thanks so much Butterfingers!

I picked up this little toy from ebay.  It's not really a top, but it spins.  Does anyone have any idea what it is?  Looks like it could have been the Saturn part of a model of the solar system.  The metal stem is magnetic, and the plastic glows in the dark.

...I'm glad you like the tops.  :) I was lucky enough to be around when Don Olney was downsizing and I brought home as many as I could find. I love the Monarc tops more than I care to admit. I've given away quite a few to new top spinners over the last year or so.

With some practice you can make it jump from the track onto the floor and have it continue spinning.

The problem is with the ssl and perhaps added to the size. When I see this forum in https://, as I generally do, your signature images don't load up (I recommend you remove the s).
They do load when I see the forum in http:// However, for that image that didn't work and I had to remove the s from the image url itself for it to load.
I also added a width value to keep it from blowing up.

Strange, spintrix is configured to only serve via https, so putting https makes problem with certificate verification but http which must be redirected later to https works?  :o

This is "Irish Beauty" by Nils Kohring of German Spinning Tops Rule.  It's tungsten copper, over Mokuti (titanium laminate where different grades of titanium are folded together to get contrast), over titanium.

That green top is a beauty, no doubt!  8)
Tungsten Copper for maximum mass where it counts, plus titanium for stiffness and lightweight for the rest.
But the metallic iridescent is what makes it a piece of art. Congrats, PrincessTrouble!

Pepe the colored Tuolo top need 28 strands of Aunt Lydia line about 11 feet long. Wind tight and throw like the Colombians. It's fun. The green step on the crown looks like you can attach to it. How deep is it?

My latest brass tops.  The center one has some sweet engraving.  It's a bit difficult to launch due to the high COG but once you master that, it's a smooth spinner.  The rightmost one has a guilloche pattern on it, made with a rose engine. Sort of an old technique for embellishing metal and wood, as I understand it.

Go-Go Top by the Chuck Howard Mfg. Co. Bakersfield CA.  Just bought this silly little thing on ebay, with shipping less than $8.  It basically looks like two balls with a bolt through the middle.  Can't wait to give it a spin.  At the time (1970's?) it was billed as the "longest spinning top in the world" and "as seen on T.V.".  Pat. Pend. #193,667.  I imagine you might be able to play it like a diabolo with sticks and a string.  Of course, I rather throw it like a spin top.  There may be video after it arrives.

Beautiful tops, Pepe! You have really got into Taiwanese Tuoluo throwing!  :o  8)

Good catch, Renee. My version of this top was called the Spin-Bangers   :P

They are from the same company, but a slight change: mine is from Chuck Howard Toy CO. Inc. of Santa Monica, CA, while yours is from Chuck Howard Mfg., CO., of Bakersfield, CA.
That would suggest to me that yours is an earlier version. On the other hand, mine says Pat. Applied For, with no number, what would indicated the reverse  :-\ I would need to look at my patent files to see if I have that patent.

I brought my spin bangers to worlds in Cleveland and we had some fun with it. I could even boomerang them! But you have to be careful as they are solid heavy balls and could knock you out!

One day I need to assemble a gallery of tops that have claimed: "longest spinning top in the world". It's a long list  ;D

I still don't get how this thing works as a top.

One day I need to assemble a gallery of tops that have claimed: "longest spinning top in the world". It's a long list  ;D

Seems like every Kickstarter campaign hawking a new top claims this, the fastest spin, or a revolutionary new top design. Ditto for sites selling high-end EDC tops.

These days, such claims are easily disproven with a few minutes on Google. So why are they still made? Are consumers that gullible or lazy? Or has lying become so prevalent that everyone expects it and no one cares?

The two balls are fixed to each other. You just wrap the string around the waist formed between the balls and throw it. The thing will spin along the axis going through the two balls. No matter what ball touches the floor first, it will roll, accelerating the precession and making the top stand up. It works well.

I just noticed that Renee's says Hours of Fun from 6 to 60. I think many on this forum would strongly contest that upper limit  :D

Well, I for one am totally outraged, offended, indignant, disgusted, and apoplectic with disapproval. Toy box agism will be seen by historians as the defining social injustice of our time. And old geezers like me aren't the only victims...

Every few minutes, the  people at the corner table pumped their fists in the air and shouted, "51 days!". Finally, the bartender had to ask,
"What are you folks celebrating?"
"Just our biggest jigsaw puzzle ever!"
"So what's with the 51 days?"
"Oh, that's how long it took us!"
"Hmmm, is that good?"
"Well, heck yeah! It said 4 to 6 years on the box!"

I'll let myself out...

Apparently this is the same manufacturer that made a clacker type toy called Ker-Bangers that were banned because they exploded and caused injury.  I wonder if the go-go top and spin-bangers were made from the leftover ker-bangers balls?

https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/1985/dangerous-toys-seized-by-us-marshal-in-phoenix
Dangerous Toys Seized By U.S. Marshal In Phoenix
0
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 10, 1985
Release # 85-065

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that on December 6, the United States Marshal's Office in Phoenix, Arizona seized almost 4,600 banned "clacker ball" toys. The toys, labeled "KER-BANGERS," are a hand-held novelty item consisting of two plastic balls connected by a cord to a plastic handle. When the hand is raised and lowered, the balls "clack" or bang against each other in an arc. Despite the claim on the package that the "KER-BANGERS" are "SHATTERPROOF," when the Consumer Product Safety Commission tested these toys, the balls either shattered or cracked. In addition, many of the handles broke. Consumers who have "KER-BANGERS" should promptly throw them away.

The toys were the seized at the premises of a wholesaler, Empire Novelty & Concession Supply, Inc. 2213 East Indian School Road, Phoenix, Arizona. Empire Novelty is voluntarily recalling the toys from its customers, who are retailers. The "KER-BANGERS" were shipped from California and, according to the label, were manufactured by Chuck Howard Toy Co. of Inglewood, California. The manufacturer is no longer in business.

Clacker balls were a popular toy in the early 1970's. To prevent injuries from fragmentation of the balls or from propulsion of the parts upon sudden disassembly during use, they are subject to a regulation enforced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which requires them to pass specific durability tests.

Wow! :o Great info!
I bet you are right! I wonder if the same balls that were banned from clackers would have been legal for tops.
But I guess for collectors this makes the tops more interesting.  ;)

The Shatterproof claim proved to be a slight exaggeration, like the claim of the longest spin in the world  ;D

I couldn't get a good spin outside on the asphalt driveway.  The rough surface kills the spin before it can stand up.  I tried it on a 4x5 foot piece of Masonite, but the heavy solid top travels too far for that small of a space.  So, I went back to the kitchen where the very first time I threw it, I got a perfect spin but no video, of course.  Trying to throw it like you would a regular top for a spinner, it kept banging into the cabinets but would eventually spin.  I found the best spin I got was throwing it horizontal like for a trapeze.

ta0 - I've scarred mine up pretty good because I plan to just play with it and enjoy it while it lasts.  But, I was very careful taking the tag/label off the bag.  If you would like just the label for your collection, let me know.

Stainless twist damascus, Corvette Fordite, stainless steel grip sleeve by Topped Out (https://www.facebook.com/groups/232328233776670/).

An explanation of Fordite that I cobbled together from several online articles:

As part of the automotive painting process in the "old days" (when Ford and other assembly line cars were hand sprayed), paint buildup on the skids and racks used for transporting the cars down the paint line occurred. Many layers (hundreds or even thousands) of different color overspray would build up and get repeatedly baked, forming a hardened slag, solid as some rock formations. Over time, the residue became too thick and had to be removed from the line because it ended up interfering with the painting process.  The harden paint slabs that were removed became known as Fordite, a general term for a material made up of paint layers formed during the hand spraying years in auto plants.  The phasing out of hand spraying on the assembly line began long ago and has been replaced by robots and electrostatic painting processes. The paint overspray used to create Fordite is no longer found in auto factories because of new painting technology.  The old paint that had to be chiseled off the assembly line and booths is no longer available, making Fordite very collectible, especially with jewelry makers.  From the name, we often associate Fordite with the Ford Manufacturing plant. However, it can actually come from any of the automobile manufactures that built cars during the mid-1900s, though most of it comes from the Detroit automotive plants (it's also known as Detroit Agate).

The Fordite in this top came from the Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Now that's a beauty! Love how the top's shaped surface cuts the 3D folds in the paint layers.

You see very similar patterns in outcrops of layered metamorphic rocks that were once buried, heated, and folded at depths of 25+ km before returning to the surface to be cut by erosion.

Thanks for the interesting background on Fordite.

A surprise gift from JNeff at the RIT festival! I bought some line and I'll be working on long distance wire walkers when I can play outside.

..and, also at the RIT festival, LarryD handed me a very nice silver Siren King top. A wonderful surprise!

It's 'a Kostas' me nothing. It was a gift.  :)

It came with this slick insert:

it references website www.svoures.gr - it's not been updated in a while and nothing for sale - no prices. It's too bad because the top is super nice.

A Taiwan patch? Might be fun. I am just starting with this type of top and it would be good to have a path for learning.

I took a day off recently and went to Vidler's 5 and 10 (Yes, it's an old timey type five and dime) and found these tops. My son bought one a few weeks ago and I made the trip to buy more.

They are very interesting. The body and crown are reminiscent of the mexican trompo (King Cobra model) complete with cobra logo. The button is very similar to the Duncan variety. The crown has the same slot with triangle as the Duncan tops. Mexican style holster and crown ring. They are bearing tip and have a light up feature which cycles through many colors as soon as the top begins to spin. Much to my surprise, they are very well balanced and play nicely. $2.99 each. I think they are a bargain.

Been working on this one for a while.  It's made from HDPE I melted and supposed to be a OWB top, I thought I got it done, but the OWB won't lock on the Delrin tip  :'(  It's probably going to take a bit more love to get it working like I want.  Ended up locking the bearings to play with it fixed, it does okay... at least it looks pretty  :)

New ones are the red & orange stbs & the green giulia!

From left to right,

- OWB Giulia
- Fixed STB
- OWB Love
- Bearing STB
- Bearing Giulia

:) I'm not sure they will stay that way, I'm waiting for a nice diabolo shaped tip from jospin... it's not impossible the green will become fixed... I have 3 spare OWB but I failed at installing it in the Red STB. The well is just way too big :(... I might retry or just enjoying as a fixed tip.. it's super fun, it walks like a champion! Especially considerign all my other tops don't walk that much :)

Cheers

that said, I'd have loved to have the bottom varnished or at least some oil on the bottom. Now there is stain of grass and dirt!!!

It plays so much differently than the paper one!!!

I forgot to post these when they arrived. Purchased from David  - a forum member who shipped them from Spain! It looks like he took down the original post.

2 turbo iron silver (used) 2 Strummol8 (like new!). All work very well so they will be fun to throw around. I'm very pleased to have them.

The Turbo Iron silver tops are quite nice and the bearings are supernaturally smooth and spin for a very long time.

Bought a new 3" John Marcus top at Miamisburg.  I think it looks like a Pendleton wool camp blanket when it spins.  Should I call it Pendleton, or Pendlespin?

That is a nice top. It looks better in person, though. I really like the Markus tops for many reasons...but you don't know what they will look like when they spin. Of course you can guess the colors while the top is at rest but it's always a surprise when they spin.

(https://i.ibb.co/hdT71fJ/golo-size-10-green.jpg) (https://ibb.co/hdT71fJ)
Thought I'd twist some new string for the new top.  I didn't have any true green thread, so I ordered this "golo"brand in what they call size 10.
BEWARE:  Golo size 10 is visibly thinner than Aunt Lydia size 10.  (But, they have some nice colors.)
This led to all kinds of trouble during twisting, mixing two different thicknesses of thread.  I finally got a good twist by making sure I had the same number of strands on each hook of each size.  And that string turned out to be about the same diameter as the string that Johnm gave me with the top.  I used two strands of Aunt Lydia, and four strands of golo on each of four hooks.

These are beautiful tops. I would like to see videos with the basic tricks. What shows the ability of a top are wire walkers - cork screw - stair way to heaven etc. not a bunch of regenerations. To me there is nothing great about a snap start - I like the long throw with a tip catch. And I don’t see the Colombians doing the stair way to Heaven? I think the tip neck is to large? And my operation is September 10 PRAY for ME. I would like a snap start after the operation for the hip.

Went to World Fest in Louisville, KY today.  [ https://louisvilleky.gov/government/city-events/worldfest ] As usual, I was carrying a top.  But, I forgot to bring give-away tops with me.  Anyway, I was disappointed not to see any spinning tops.  But, finally at the Japanese booth, there were koma!  I got my TG out and mentioned that I spin tops.  The person running the booth, was not a spinner.  But, her helper was keen to try.  So, he took a couple of throws but was unsuccessful.  It didn't help that it was tight quarters with mobs of people all around, and the drop off to the Ohio River just 5 feet away.  While I was giving the young man some tips, a fellow from the adjoining booth approached and said he had played with them as a child in Spain.  Thanks to this forum, I knew he would have called it a peonza.  He was excited to see the top, and asked to give it a try.  He said the method of throwing was different, more overhand.  I said, of course you were probably throwing wooden tops and trying to smash the others.  He smiled and tried an overhand throw, without success.  He didn't seem to care, and thanked me.  I think he will probably be recalling fond memories.
I purchased one of the little koma's for $3.  It's wood, with a straight spindle, and 2" diameter.

“Larry, forgive me, but I need to be an equal opportunity pain in the neck (I recently did it to another poster), so write 100 times: Colombia, Colombia, Colombia . . .         ”

Now, 7 years later - it's your turn my friend.  :)

Jorge, forgive me, but I need to be an equal opportunity pain in the neck.

Ha, Larry!  :-[  ;D I won't forget now that it's spelled Lombok!
But this is a little unfair: a forum search found only this one instance of the use of Lombock by myself or anybody else.  On the other hand Columbia instead of Colombia has been a recurrent thing, and they are two very different places! There is not another place on earth that is spelled Lombock.
Colombia is a well known country of 50 million people, while Lombok is an obscure island of Indonesia.
In addition, Lombok and Lombock would be pronounced the same way, while Columbia and Colombia I don't think they are.

We went to a couple antique malls today, and I picked up these three tops for $5.  The dark one is quite dense, it's 3.5 in tall, 2.25 in. wide, and weighs 90 gm.  I haven't tried to throw it yet.  Need to smooth the tip a bit first.

I'm getting a top for Chrismas,  which I bought online at trompos space.
Since my father gave me the money from my grandfather,  who died,  I decided to buy something he would be proud of too.
So, after some time on the world wide web,  I got this one!

(https://i.ibb.co/Z24Q8DS/neptuno.jpg) (https://ibb.co/Z24Q8DS)

It would be a while till it gets to Belgium,  but it arrived today,  the Day before Xmas eve  :)
My mom made it into a beautiful gift,  stored in a small box , gift wrap ...
But she said it should be a suprise,  even for me,  so I was not allowed to look  >:(
Luckely,  tomorrow Xmas eve.  We have a feast at my grandmother's home.  Then the presents!   :D
We will have a great time together :)
I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a happy , healthy 2020!
Picture of my own coming soon !

Nice present!
Spintop in Basque language is Ziba.
But I'm pretty sure that top was manufactured by Can-Cels of Barcelona, so it's actually a Baldufa (spintop in Catalan).

I got my very own set of tree tops this Christmas :) It is special because these are the very first tops I ever played with. Mark K brought them into work to spin during lunch on a big Tupperware lid on the floor of my office. We lured other co-workers in as they wondered why we were giggling and yelling out "forest!" every time we got them all spinning. Good times. I know I'm guilty of saying that whatever top is currently in my hand is my favorite top....but these ones REALLY are my favorite tops because they bring back fond memories of how this journey started.

Hello all,
Yesterday at Loon Plage,  I knew I could not leave without buying a top!
Bought one from Mermouy, it's a beauty!
I was in awe at his work,  making 3D printed tops   :D

Also, me and my lover got a gift from CUPER  :)
Two cute, but great tops!  I love miniature things!

(https://i.ibb.co/1LGwDJw/IMG-20200209-163900-162.jpg) (https://ibb.co/1LGwDJw)

I was actually going to buy 1 or 2 , but CUPER was so kind to let us throw a mini top, and said it was a gift  :)
I should update my collection with a photo.  And make some room for them.

Some candy from loon-plage...

Candy, indeed, my friend!

The scientist in me loves the H2O top but cringes a little at the linear arrangement. That would have been perfect for CO2, but water oscillates pretty tightly around an H-O-H angle of about 109°, not 180°.

Then again, water's a lot more popular than CO2 these days.

Yes, I see lots of play value here. Sure hope they can't multiply. Otherwise, it could be tribbles all over again. :o

Guessing that rolling the wheels spins up an internal horizontal flywheel very loosely coupled to the outer shell by friction or air currents.

Guessing that rolling the wheels spins up an internal horizontal flywheel very loosely coupled to the outer shell by friction or air currents.

I disassembled one:

As Jeremy said, the front wheels turn some gears that engage the axis of the flywheel. Very simple mechanism.
The weight of the flywheel is 22.7 gr while the whole car is 37 gr., accounting for about 60% of the total. Interestingly, the flywheel is made cheaply by a stack three washers.
Although there is internal air drag and also friction at the flywheel sockets, I guess most of the "friction" that makes the top spin would come from the inertia and friction of the gears and wheels.

There is also a related spinning robot (https://www.amazon.com/JJRC-Novelty-Spinning-Robot-Battle/dp/B07TLKFDZ2):

I hadn't seen that! It's the same thing and at the lowest price I've seen ($5.99):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i04cJUeDxDo

I wonder if they licensed it, and whose invention is it. The Duncan video is from November 2018. The oldest video I found on youtube is the one above from January 2017. It is now marketed under lots of brands, worldwide.

In some ways, these things are mechanically equivalent to wizzzers: You spin up an internal metal flywheel by rolling a connected external wheel on the ground and then handle a coaxial plastic flywheel shroud with a much smaller AMI.

A weak frictional coupling allows angular momentum to leak slowly from flywheel to shroud when the latter is free to turn. The relatively low shroud AMI means that a small angular momentum gain quickly turns into a big gain in shroud angular speed.

I've been itching to make a new top for a while, but I've had an idea on how to precisely bore out the inside on my mini metal lathe (it was very blind on the wood lathe).  Finally finished the tools to bore on the metal lathe (been working on them off and on for the last 8 months or so ha ha) and turned out this beauty.  Decided to try a v-notched tip for better regenerations as per Neff's posts on the subject... Can't say I notice much of a difference, but it plays like a dream either way!  Very happy with the dye job.  I might put this one up for sale eventually... but haven't decided for sure yet.

Wow! What a nice find for a spinning top guy!  8) Must have been a big egg.
Back in Uruguay we also have the tradition (likely brought from Italy) of Easter chocolate eggs with surprises inside.

Almost as good as winning the lottery!

Guessing it delivers enough spin time to be at least mildly entertaining -- despite the small mass and max radius.

Maybe 30 seconds...  not very much.  Also the top is unbalanced, and there is a bit of spontaneous nutation, (torque free precession).
But it's fun to play with, I don't have to worry about bumps or scratches, like with my tops.
At the end of the spin there is usually some intermittent wobble, which I like to look at.

Congrats! That was a Muffets Cereal promotion.
The best part is the instructions sheet that came with it.
I haven't been able to pin down the year. The 3ct stamp is not enough. Eventually we should find an ad for it.

Hello folks,
How it's going?

Today is a wonderful day!
My uncle found these old wooden tops in my grandfather's basement. (My grandfather that is stil alive.)
He gave them to me,  because my grandfather don't want them , and they are just rotting in that basement.
I don't know how old they are.  But it's amazing that they still can spin !
Got the dust off, and oiled them with walnut oil.
One of the two had no tip,  but it looked like it once had one.
Made a tip from an iron nail, which I put in place and cut it at right  length.
Made before and after pics.

(https://i.ibb.co/FHdrD9g/20200426-153328.jpg) (https://ibb.co/FHdrD9g)

They can stil spin,  but that was only with adding a crown.  I think I just let it be this way. Without a crown , they look beautiful this way.
I 'm going to learn the winding technique for crownless tops , done by Larry D.
Lefty,  but it's going to work ! Already tested it out!
And a fun fact : they seem more lighter than my other wooden tops.  I managed to 'almost 'boomerang these  :D
Practice makes perfect.
Have a nice day everyone  ;)

Congratulations, Hydrona!
It's wonderful that you brought these pegtops back to life!

I don't think they ever had a crown. They were meant to be wrapped from the tip up.
You may want to file the tips to make them rounder and gentler on your hand.

This comes from Daniel Lassanske's collection. It was listed as "Antique 19th Century Hand carved spinning top toy ivory/bone." The description said: "It is made of a precious ivory colored material that has a grain like wood." I bought it mainly because Daniel's daughter described it as "the best example of the type that I have seen", and of course she has seen a great sample of tops  ;D

(https://i.ibb.co/sRR7sFC/image.png) (https://imgbb.com/)

For the sake of bidding I assumed it was bone, but I had a suspicion it was ivory from what I could discern on the photos. In effect, when I got it, it became obvious to me that it was ivory, and not just any ivory (e.g. whale) but from either an elephant or a mammoth (the crosshatch Schreger lines at the top and bottom are too close to 90 degrees in this case to tell them apart). I don't think mammoth tusks were carved in the 19th century, so it must be elephant ivory. Actually, although the whistling window was carved, I'm sure the rest was turned. I count 10 different pieces glued together, although most of the body is just one piece.

When I spun it with the fingers I was pleasantly surprised that it's very well balanced, knowing that it might have never been spun since purchased. It didn't come with the launcher so I 3D printed a small launcher/pedestal. I wasn't very hopeful that it would have good sound, specially considering that it's a piece made for display not for play. Boy, was I surprised at how loud it is!

I did not check the forum for a week or more, then it took me several days to try and catch up with new posts.  Not quite caught up yet.  I've been in a bit of a funk lately, first with the covid lock down, and now we're having a lot of civil unrest here in Louisville.
I bought a group of tops on ebay that arrived May 29, and were quarantined in the garage for several days.  So here's a too long and rambling video of what was in the box.

I should mention the strummol8 and other tops I
got in Miamisburg last month! (I should have posted this a month ago, totally forgot about this page  :-\)

(https://i.ibb.co/PMspBGd/16005693255761716476779.jpg) (https://ibb.co/PMspBGd)
John Buechele gave it to me. I couldn't believe it! Earlier when we were in the hall of fame I pointed at a strummol8 Giulia and said that was the only top brand I hadn't spun, and just before I left to go to my hotel Mr. Buechele came up to me and handed me a stb 2.0! I couldn't thank him enough!!  :o

Another amazing top I aquired at the festival was this incredible HDPE top given to me and made by Johnm.

 Thanks a bunch Johnm!

Several tops and a few books from Don Onley's were given to me by The Earl of Whirl while we were in the hall of fame as well. Thanks very much Earl!

Got this handsome spin top in the mail today!
Always wanted this one, but waited too long. Sold out almost everywhere.
Luckely I found it on Amazon. Still a lot of shipping and handling costs, but I'm happy it's in one piece!
A year or so ago, I saw this top on the trompos space site. I decided it was too expensive for a beginner.
A few weeks back, I dreamed about it! Almost forgot about it. Luckily my dream remembered me about this top.
I searched the world wide web, no avail... Everything sold out. Except Amazon. So I purchased it there.
This is one of 8000 limited edition graffiti roller made. It has a bearing tip, although it's a bit fixed.
The Bearing probably needs some exercise, for it to run smoothly.

Ah, the good ol' Trompos Space Graffiti Roller. I always wanted one, but it was a bit expensive for me.... ::)

As for the bearing, CLEAN IT AS SOON IMMIDIATLEY I AM POUNDING ON TH#E KEYS RIGHT NOW

Being serious, trompos space bearings are really messed up now. They come over lubricated, which is probably why it might not work very well, and might even feel like it's fixed. Sad. To clean the bearings on the Jupiter roller/Graffiti roller, you can either use some drops of thin yoyo lube (The type for unresponsive yoyo bearings), or you can use mineral spirits, which is the better method. Here's a video on how to clean the bearing with mineral spirits: (the better way, not the way I do it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYDQONWQF9E&ab_channel=Morgoroth37

Thank you for the help, Texture.
I'm handling the top right now. No doubt about it that it will work.
The only thing I have lying around the house is nail polish remover.
Just put a tiny bit inside. Enough to cover the bearing.
I have breakfast now, after a 10 minutes I'm going to look at the top.
It actually sucks that the bearing is sealed inside the top...
But nothing that stops me  :).

Thank you ta0  :)

Be careful! I believe nail polish remover is acetone. It may dissolve the plastic!
Title: Re: Share your latest spintop acquisition!!
Post by: Jeremy McCreary on May 21, 2021, 11:41:43 AM
Don't know about other plastics, but acetone will definitely attack ABS. Also, nail polish remover could leave an unwanted residue when it dries, as I think it's not 100% acetone.

If you can't find the yoyo lube recommended above, a very thin penetrating oil like WD40 from the hardware store might also free your bearing. But some plastics might not like that, either.

Title: Re: Share your latest spintop acquisition!!
Post by: Hydrona on May 22, 2021, 04:18:24 AM
No worries.
The nail polish remover did not do its job... Only a bit. The bearing is a bit better.
Going to just leave it like it is. Yesterday I spun the top, and it was amazing!

Bonjour Hydrona,

Bonne utilisation.

OMG! I was trying to decipher the messages in French on my phone when a pop-up from Google Translate appeared all on its own. Basically, the pop-up indicated that it had detected some French and wanted to know if I'd like to see it in English.

So I took the offer, and lo and behold, the entire page, previously full of French, instantly became English, as if the page had been in English all along. Good, grammatical, idiomatic English -- with contractions even!

We live in a world of magic. :o

PS: Well, I guess we also live in a world of mystery. Try as I might, I can't get that pop-up to reappear. Maybe, as the movie hero might say after saving the day, it felt that "My work here is done."

These tops were a gift from Elid Torres, an artisan from Tabasco Mexico.

Gus visited him for over a month. They exchanged ideas on top design. Gus showed Elid a Duncan Whistler I once gave him and Elid made the copy on the left. It's made of heavy hardwood and the black areas are burned marks. To duplicate the whistle he used two washers, spaced about 5 mm. I didn't think it would work, but it does whistle well. Perhaps the Duncan whistler has a higher peak loudness, but Elid's top whistles longer and at lower speed. I was really surprised and pleased. By the way, he also copied the Magic Groove, but he made it the right way, slanted. Gus also showed him a koma, what my have influenced the shape of the flatter whistler. It also whistles well.

The unpainted all-wooden top is interesting. You can throw it with a string but also spins very well if you use it as a finger top: a true hybrid. It's an original shape for a top.

The fourth top is made of bull horn. I remember when I was in Uruguay somebody produced a similar top from his pocket. Since then I wanted one and finally have it.  :)

Gorgeous all, but the 2 in the middle really knock my socks off -- especially the one on the right! Closer photos, please.

While I'm asking for favors, could you also show a close-up of the 2-washer whisting system. Maybe I could adapt it to my tops. The best I've done so far is a cross between a low hum and a hiss, and only at the highest speeds.

Thanks!

Very nice tops! I can't believe just by showing the whistling system to someone they can duplicate it so easily!   :o

Could you show a sideways picture of the first one? I'd like to see if I can make a similar design with the whistling system.

I tried to measure carefully the gap between the washers and it's about 8 mm. The hole is about 3.35 mm wide (1/8").

One of the washers of the wooden whistler came out, what gave me the opportunity to test the sound with just one washer. The sound mostly disappeared, proving that the two washers separated by a gap are needed for the top to whistle efficiently.

Got this today! A mercurio neon roller oro!
Ordered past Friday, and already here! Fast delivery!
Also ordered a glow in the dark cord with it.
It both came in a strong box.
The top itself is pretty heavy, and spins great!  ;D.
Going to have a good time with it. I only practice on grass, I don't want to break the top.
Thanks to trompos space for the great service and amazing tops  ;).

It's nice to see that Trompos Space is still in business. My understanding is that Javier Caballero had arranged to sell Trompos Space to dedicate himself to other opportunities. But then hit covid and his other businesses were more directly affected by the pandemic, so he changed plans.

A question : how do I clean the bearing inside the top?
It spins, but very shorty. Most say mineral spirits. I have white spirit somewhere..
But I'm scared that it will damage the brass and/or plastic inside.
I'm searching on Google, but all mixed thoughts...
Can anyone help me out?
Thank you in advantage  ;)

Mineral spirits is ideal, because it will not damage the plastic or the brass or anything. What I do is pour some into a jar, and then place the tip inside for a while. The bearing should spin nicely afterwards. You can also try using some drops of thin yoyo lube in the hole of the tip, but that doesn't work as well.

I got this top from Tip Top Crafts on Etsy:

It's made from the seed pod from the Australian Banksia tree. Even with all the deep seed cavities, it spins quite well. The maker says that the wood is very hard. The handle is made out of pear and the axle is fiberglass. It's 5 inches tall. It's a curious top, although not my first one from a seed pod.
It came with a free surprise gift: a Benham color illusion top, made from a CD with a wooden axle.

The maker is Dick Bischoff, a retired academic living in University City, MO (suburb of St. Louis). I mentioned to him this forum, hopefully he joins. He makes nice tops at very reasonable prices: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TipTopCrafts

Nice catch! Interesting shape, and a well-designed string-pull that looks to be easy on the hands. A good string- or ribbon-pull starter is a thing of beauty -- simple yet very powerful.

I can see how this mass distribution would benefit from a high-speed starter: High CM + low central TMI/AMI ratio = high critical speed.  Play depends on a large positive net speed = release - critical speed. Can you get enough net speed by hand?
Title: Re: Share your latest spintop acquisition!!
Post by: ta0 on September 03, 2021, 12:56:48 PM
With the palm of the hands I can get it to spin about 12 seconds with the axle vertical and 20 seconds until if falls down. I cannot spin it with my fingers. With the starter it's a 1 minute top.

An extra string starter was another nice touch by Dick.

All too often, topmakers limit their non-throwing top designs to those the average user can start by hand. Unfortunately, this excludes a huge chunk of the top design space -- and with it, many great tops with tons of play value. Just add a starter that's fun in its own right!

Glad Dick was willing to go outside this box on this one. Bet it looks nice asleep. And endurance tops aside, you can gets lots of play value out of a minute of spin time.

I have not been posting so much the last few years but all the tops I got in my first few years are destroyed at this point so here are my acquisitions over the past year or so.

First up I bought these during the Spintastics sale last year and the black one is the Blizzard prototype that has probably one of the best designs I've used on a bearing top:

(https://i.ibb.co/k87Ccx3/IMG-20211013-234937977.jpg) (https://ibb.co/yy9jsXh)

Earlier this year I celebrated getting a new job by buying a couple of nice koma from Spingear and I can now do a wire walker with them:

(https://i.ibb.co/8YCJw4s/IMG-20211013-234945060.jpg) (https://ibb.co/5K0d3x4)

After that I purchased my favorite top yet, a Sweetle. Unfortunately I stripped out the nut almost immediately so this is purely a bearing top at the moment:

(https://i.ibb.co/YfXzdY5/IMG-20211013-234954225.jpg) (https://ibb.co/BTGX6dh)

About a week ago I got this Neptuno and it's my absolute favorite fixed tip top outside of my QSH which is in rough shape these days, lol. The shape and weight is just great:

(https://i.ibb.co/f0n65sM/IMG-20211013-235004722.jpg) (https://ibb.co/j4W02Sh)

Finally I got a pack of 4 Cometa Cobritas today to give to my nephews and have already made custom string and balanced them. They are suprisingly great tops I must say:

Oh I really appreciate that! I was going to contact you about ordering some replacements and ask about how to set the Sweetle up for fixed tip play without the nut, but I do like the option to switch between them. I didn't receive an email but I attempted to send you one as well in case it's an issue with the forum email feature.

I am in the train on the way back home from a wonderfull time at the Marines festival. Except the tops I bought as presents for the kids my wife and my friend that does the work on the lathe for me, I got those in the picture above.
Ludo gave me the red and green plastic top ( Duncan bearing King?) as a present.  I practiced already a lot with that one. Very proud to say that I manage a boomerang with  it, maybe once in five tries.
The wooden one Rocco made for me on the spot. It was a pleasure seeing him make it! In the hands of those who can, it can do all the tricks! Me being an absolute beginner who never touched a throw top until five days ago, I feel happy when I get a good spin that I can pick up from the floor with the string and land it in my hand. But I think it is a beauty.
And a big big thank you to all the best teachers I had at Marines: Jim, Rocco, Mermouy, Emmanuel, Ludo, Attila, ...

Edit: oh, I forgot to mention the little self made top that Jim  gave to me. But that one is deep in the suitcase. I can not get it out for a picture just now.

Congratulations! You are now really part of this unique and obsessed tribe!  ;D

Do you really mean "boomerang"? That trick is throwing the top directly to your hand. If you throw it on the floor, the trick to get it to the hand with the string is called skyrocket.

I had wanted for a while a koma wrapped in kimono cloth, since I saw a couple in a museum book (https://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,1972.msg19929.html#msg19929). I finally got one:

It's not an antique koma but just a reproduction tourist souvenir and it was priced accordingly. It's made of light wood but the cloth finish (listed as silk, but I doubt it) looks really nice.
I am not sure if the old kimono tops were meant for just display or also to be played. This was one for certain was sold just for decoration, but I couldn't resist and threw it on the floor and also boomeranged it to my hand. The balance is not good, but it works.

By the way, on the novel I wrote a few years ago, there is one of these komas, wrapped in cloth from a kimono that had belonged to the grandmother of one to the characters.  :)

Since February the peg-tops I own multiplied.
Today I received the Sweetle I ordered from Chris Neff.

(https://i.ibb.co/wWMCjGd/Sweetle-4.jpg) (https://ibb.co/wWMCjGd)
It is the largest top in the picture. Next to it is the wooden top that Rocco made for me and to the other side in similar colours as the Sweetle is a Blizzard that Jim In Paris sent to me.

Well, what can I say about the sweetle after the first few throws?
It is absolutely amazing! It feels great on the hand and on the string. All the tricks I can do already are so much easier to perform with this top! I like its  size, I like how long it can run with that bearing, it is easy and quick to convert it to a great fixed tip top ...
With this top I feel I will be able to learn the tricks on my goal list a lot faster than with my other tops - be it the tricks on the bearing list or on the fixed tip list.

Congratulations!

I agree with your impression of the Sweetle. I would say it's the best all-around top that's available right now.

Who would have said before you went to the festival in Marines that you would become a full-blown spintop trick player!  :)

Correct, equipment wise I do not have an excuse left  for the very most tricks.
I even received another top this week that I did not mention yet: a YYF "Elec-Trick LED"
I call that my "winter top". For one it is whitish looking a bit like ice or snow. Secondly the bluish LED makes it better visible in the long nights of winter. And finally - and that is the main reason why I ordered it - it has a plastic tip making it feasible for indoor play. That means I can practice a bit throw tops  even if I will mainly go back to endurance tops in the winter season.

Unfortunately mine was shipped that way even though I ordered directly from the Strummol8 shop and after Maurizio wrote in a different topic here that all the dreamcatchers would now be shipped with the new tip.
Also I asked specifically when ordering for the new tip. I asked Maurizio through PM what we can do about this, but I did not receive an answer up to now. I will wait a few days longer....
Luckily I had also ordered a replacement tip. The one I received was the new type, bigger tip. I almost instantly put that one in my Augusta because I noticed the old type does not hold on good to the string at all for me (almost  beginner). The new one also came with better bearings it seems, at least I get almost twice the spin time for a boomerang to my hand.

Where did you order from? To what country is it shipping?

Yesterday, I visited my youngest sister and she had a birthday cake for me as we couldn't celebrate 2 weeks ago. Not only it was the favorite cake from my childhood (filled with dulce de leche and a merengue crust) but there was a finger top between the candles! It's a Pinocchio top, the one on the right:

(https://i.ibb.co/HzhjSK8/image.png) (https://ibb.co/d2mRTfY)

It's made in Italy, by Mastro Geppetto  :D

(https://i.ibb.co/6JPq0n0/image.png) (https://ibb.co/3YNPmrm)

I believe the one on the left is also Pinocchio. From the stamp on the backside, I think it's Japanese:

(https://i.ibb.co/Jd2mxjR/image.png) (https://ibb.co/Qcnp8vF)

Hakone is a city south of Tokyo. I may have got it from Don Olney's collection, I'm not sure.
It looks pretty old. The Disney movie is from 1940 and this could be post WWII. But the Italian children's novel The Adventures of Pinocchio is from 1883, so it could be earlier. And perhaps it's not even Pinocchio.  :-\

Impressive!!!
Especially the micro tops and that you can still spin them.
Could you please tell us how tiny the diameter of the smallest one is? And do you have a microscope to post close ups for us?
Last year in Marines Rocco showed the tiny top below, but in comparison to these it is probably a giant.

The smallest top has a diameter of 2 mm. On the tip of the finger it's just a speck and I'm terrified about blowing it away each time I handle it as I will never find it again.

Lots of them fit in a penny (the smallest US coin):

Mr. Fukushima made them with the regular lathe (how it's possible and how he paints them, blows my mind). Although he makes all sizes of tops, he is famous for the miniatures. This is a miniature koma shop he had for sale (I couldn't afford it):

And this top from Ms. Ayako Watanabe (Mr. Hito's apprentice)....

Wonderful! Japan's on my bucket list, with a focus on its wild geology and marvelous spinning tops. Doesn't get much better than that!

Energia Ludica had in its booth at Loon-Plage and at Marines micro tops that were also 2 mm in diameter. The height was 3 mm, what makes them a little easier to spin (they do spin well). They are also made by Alberto on a regular lathe. As I already have the Japanese one I did not get it. The cost is 30 euros what might make it the most expensive top per weight ever. A back of the envelope calculation gives me a weight of about half a milligram, or a price of around $60k per gram, one thousand times more than gold!

What I did get from them were the two finger tops spinning on the right of this photo:

I was testing their tops when Alberto's partner told me that the colored top was for men as it required strong fingers. I was happy when I succeed spinning it, so I bought it. Later Alberto told me that for a pro I should get the nicer one on the right. It comes on a package that says:  "Is getting to the moon an impossible dream? Almost like spinning this top! A real challenge to conquer your own MOON. (Arrivare sulla luna è un sogno impossibile? Quasi come far girare questa trottola! Una vera sfida per conquistare la propia LUNA)" It is in fact two times more difficult to spin and I don't succeed every time. After practicing with these, I remembered a top that I bought many years ago from Philippe Dyon. It comes on a base where it looks like a Christmas tree. I remember that Philippe demonstrated it to me: he could spin it fine but I couldn't. I tried again, and now I can (sometimes) spin it straight for a second or two before it starts to dance. So I'll say it's double as difficult as the moon top.

From a commercial point of view, it's surprising that tops so difficult to spin are available. But they are a good challenge for hard core hobbyists.

The tall, slender look also has a lot of visual appeal. Like the ones you showed, these tops can be quite elegant. Their very high critical speeds really cut into play value by hand, but online buyers may not realize that, and buyers looking for knickknacks or desk toys may not care.

My best-looking example had a tall hollow body. Critical speed and play value by hand improved considerably when I added internal mass near the tip to lower the CM. The other way to get around the critical speed issue is with a high-speed starter. Then you get both elegance and play value.

Made one of my very best by adding a LEGO stem and tip to my dog's small rubber Kong toy.

Eventually learned to get satisfying spin times out of it by hand, but it really shines with a starter. Details here (https://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,6097.msg65598.html#msg65598).

I had forgotten about this one from Armin Kolb. I would rate the difficulty as similar to the moon top.

In addition to being tall, these finger tops are pointy, so they are not self-straightening as tops with more rounded tips.
