Wonderful scene! The 5 women on the left are completely caught up in the top. Some appear to find it thought-provoking as well. Exactly the effects tops have on me.

In The Science of Spin, author Roland Ennos finds a direct historical connection between the spinning top as a popular toy and the spindle and whorl as the key tools in the spinning of thread and cord in Neolithic times. Makes some sense.

Wonder if the culture of the drawing's time retained any awareness of this connection? If so, the top in this sewing machine ad could be functioning as a feel-good icon with a textile vibe.
