spin top spinning on water
« on: December 04, 2021, 04:23:08 AM »

helllo folks,

I got another crazy idea past night!
Can a spin top spin on water? I had to try that out!
remember my old video ? that one with the floating target in water?

I've got a better idea! This time, I used thin plastic foil to place on the water's surface. And a small lightweight top. CUPER'S are perfect! (thanks CUPER!)
I made sure that the foil touched the water,  so the top actually spins on the water  :D.

I decided to make a new thread, 'cause i deleted my Instagram account..ans so the video's are gone too. But no worries! I still got my YouTube account! and that's not going anywhere ;D!

On the first video the plate spins in the opposite direction as the top, showing the reaction force from the friction of the tip, which is the force that makes tops rise and "sleep".

Talking about sleep, the second video made me wonder what happened to waterbeds?  ;D A little search found lots of articles discussing this: Whatever happened to waterbeds>:D Here is a video with the inventor:

What an interesting video Ta0! Thanks for sharing! I never thought about waterbeds.
Now that you mentioned it, I can see friction of the top in the first video. Very interesting!
And the second one :Like the top is fighting to keep spinning. And the water makes it a lot more difficult.
I liked the little experiment, next time I improve some more. Like spinning a top in my pond! (no worries, we only have plants, no fish.)

Hello folks!
Made a new video. This time, I made a battle arena of the water bucket and plastic foil.
This morning, I wanted to practice spin tops, but an idea came to mind.
Since I have tops with round tips, I thought about testing out if they can remain balanced even on water covered with plastic foil. The sharp tips don't really spin that long on the liquid surface.
After my first success, I was thrilled!
So I made a short battle video!
Enjoy!

Hey, waterbeds for tops! :)

I think this could be interesting for top battles (with tops with non-sharp tips  >:D ).

Thank you Ta0! Maybe I should do a bigger arena, but where can I find plastic foil that big?
Anyways, I'm happy that you like it!
