Women jugglers of Tonga
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:44:07 AM »

In the Polynesian islands of the Kingdom of Tonga there is a very interesting tradition of juggling among women (exclusively). "They juggle only TuiTui nuts off of a tree and only in a shower pattern...some up to 7!"   :o 8)  Also cool is that a professional woman juggler (Connie “Paprika” Leaverton from Austin) is making a documentary about them:

I wonder if somewhere there is a tradition of only girls spinning tops . . .

This date (June 4th) is also a very special one for the people of this country.  It was on this date in 1970 that the nation of Tonga gained their independence from the United Kingdom.

Tonga and I will forever be connected because of this!

The story I heard about Tongan women and juggling was that on a festival day, the girl who could juggle the most TuiTui nuts would have first choice of the available bachelors in the village.  I don't remember where I heard that particular story, but I've known about the Tongan women for a long time. It's an interesting project.
