What do you set your Points with?
« on: August 13, 2013, 10:57:24 PM »

Hello All,

I've been turning for years but have only made a handful of spin tops.  Lots of finger spinners but only a few that you throw.  My question is how to you set the steel or delrin points so that you can replace them?  I am so used to gluing things together "forever" that I never think about replacements :)

Can you help me?

One way is a simple press fit. Make the hole a few thousands of an inch (about .008" of 0.02mm) smaller than the shaft of the tip. Chamfer the shaft. If the tip is a bit loose, a layer or two of a sandwich bag can be stretched over the shaft as a shim.  Make a pressing tool in wood or plastic with a drill & countersink to protect the point. The tail stock ram can be used as a press.
