Modular Top
« on: August 19, 2013, 05:55:29 PM »

Here is my latest spin top creation. The Modular Top.
It has a tubular central core to which the tip / crown sections thread and hold the plastic shells (found them at the store) in place.
The concept could be applied to almost any size top.
I will bring it with me on the road trip to the WTF. It doesn't take up as much space when taken apart. Great for traveling.
Surprisingly well balanced and durable. It might even be Boyd durable.

You need a new comb.

Very interesting!

I hope to get an opportunity to try it, no matter what the colors.

By the way, the Miamisburg Whirled Top Festival has been sometimes shortened to the Whirled Top Festival to give the initials WTF a more positive spin!

Thanks Jim. When I saw shape of the plastic bowls at the store, I knew they had to become a spin top. I wanted it to be all the same color, but couldn't find two bowls of the identical color.

You might feel more comfortable throwing it outside first Chris. I was finally able to throw it with just one hand yesterday.

That comb is very old and has seen some abuse. I got it at a carnival one time. The plastic is brittle and it is not really intended to be used. Just for display.

I have already put the top through the stress test at the park last weekend Mike, so it should be available for anyone to try in Miamisburg.

Plastic bowls? Throwing outside? Finally able to throw with one hand? Carnival display comb?
???  How big is this baby?  :-\  Sounds like the comb may have been a misdirection and this may be a baby elephant . . .

I was trying to imagine bowls that were proportional to the 'comb' and was coming up with nothing.  Ta0, you've unraveled the mystery  8)  The true size will be seen at the WTF, be prepared!!

Haha! Things aren't always as they appear. The comb is actually 15" long and the bowls are 10" in diameter. The top weighs a little over 2 pounds. and fits into a large flat rate USPS box when taken apart.
I am using a clothes line / window counter weight size cord to throw it. Something I would normally use for a 4 to 5 inch size top. The tip must be pointing straight up just like a normal size plastic top. No bowling style throw.
The top bounces when it lands on its side since the plastic bowls flex. So much fun to throw. It is still a workout to regenerate.
