Back to the lathe
« on: December 27, 2011, 11:32:37 PM »

A member of the Capital Area Woodturners, that I joined, ask if Redwood was too soft to make tops?  I said I was not sure but sure could try, so he gave me two blocks of Redwood.  I expect the second one to be a little better.  It is very light and has a small wobble that I was able to reduce, but not get rid of it completely.  I am not sure if I should hollow it less or try some sort of a weight ring.

Very pretty wood and the shape should play well.  Good job hollowing it.

I can see the tack for balance  ;) The tip may be undersized: is it a Spintastics or Toycrafter?

It is a Spintastics tip, fixed, I have a lot of them and I do not feel comfortable working the tip end for bearings as of yet.  The finish is friction polish, but I am thinking that the wood is really soft and maybe I should make it a sodatop.

It's a mod to protect the top body using soda/water bottles.
