Big fun with big Delrin
« on: August 31, 2011, 11:43:24 AM »

So, I've had this big hunk of black Delrin rod sitting around in the shop for a couple of years now and I got inspired to make a big Delrin top.  The rod is (was) 4 3/4" in diameter and a foot long.  I cut a 5 1/4" piece off and set about to make a big hollow Delrin top.  Besides black and white, I also have pieces of cast colored Delrin in blue, red and yellow.  I decided to make the bearing section red and the tip yellow.  Gluing Delrin to Delrin is darn near impossible, but after a serious internet search I have found out how to do it.  The tip uses skateboard bearings and while the top is heavy for a 4 1/2 inch top (1.1 lbs.) it spins so smoothly that you almost can't tell that it's spinning.  It was truly no fun hollowing this big hunk of Delrin.......even with my fancy carbide tools I had to work really slowly to avoid catches.  It took 3 + hours of constant cutting just to hollow it out.  On the plus side, being of one piece of Delrin, it's nearly indestructible.......

Man, that is one serious hunk of plastic!  So cool.

With all those colors and the ability to glue 'em, I wonder if this opens the door to laminated delrin ala Chris's Punk series?  A rod that large must not have come cheap, but perhaps sheets would be more economical?

Thanks for showing us Eric!

Awesome!

Gluing Delrin to Delrin is darn near impossible, but after a serious internet search I have found out how to do it.

Any chance you'd share a link to this precious information for those of us too lazy to do our own search?

Sure.....there are three aspects to gluing Delrin; 1).  Really close tolerances (the spigot on my tip/bearing section - the part that inserts into the bottom of top body - was a tight press fit), 2). Roughening/scoring both surfaces ( I used an Xacto knife to make both horizontal and vertical scratches), and 3).  The right adhesive...or adhesive system:

Here's the link to the product description: http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/4/2/sg_plstc/overview/Loctite-Plastics-Bonding-System.htm

Have fun....be careful not to glue your fingers together this stuff sets fast...  ;D

Eric, you could have just ask about the Delrin gluing :) note that it still isn't a permanent bond though, I have pulled apart pieces connected that way many times. The design of your tops I'd imagine has a pretty decent sized shoulder to it for the connection, which should help a lot.

Beautiful work as usual.. that's a very large chunk of Delrin to work with.

My oh my!  This I such a thrilling thread.  Tops that size made out of delrin?  Whew!!!  You are quite amazing, Eric.  I am really happy to be able to say I have one of your creations.  Thanks for the wonderful number one billiard top I got at our Miamisburg fest.  I take it everywhere and people are always impressed.  They would also be impressed with these large delrin creations.  Good work!!!

dear Eric

this is a really high tech top, very playable it seems : can you use the same string/rope to throw it and to play it ?

i like the colors too , this serious and ultimate statement of the" black" is in fact  rounded out or softened with the 2 stripes
(I recall  your team kites somehow ...)

I would simply enjoy watching you at work !!

whats next ?  " nights in white delrin "(the moody blues revisted?)

Yes, it's a cotton rope, about 5/16" in diameter and 8 feet long.......

Yes, just a wood lathe.....with that said, it's one of the smoothest, most precise wood lathes in the world, the Nova DVR XP.
