topical question :-))
« on: October 19, 2010, 02:01:32 PM »

hi all

the forum being quiet , I venture disturbing you with a topical question

" what top would you take on a desert island " ??

as for me i would take good ol' quicksilver (despite the risk of rust)

the cap could be used as an ashtray or a small pan to cook an egg
the rest would be a glass and also a mold to make sand tops

wot U think ? :D

I'd agree Jim, the quicksilver would come with me.  Heavy enough to bash a fish/fowl with or crack a coconut!  I'd need Apex with me though, to weave new string from the palm fibers when I needed it  ;D

A fixed-tip QuickSilver is likely the best answer, although with Figaro you would have wood to make a fire  . . . NOT! (if this joke sounds familiar is because once before we had this discussion, long time ago).  However, an acrylic top could be used to make fire if there is enough sunlight, what could be life saving.

Perhaps a more interesting question is how would you modify or design from scratch a spintop (and the string and button) to be an emergency tool if you get stranded in an island.  For example, perhaps one could make the interior of the QuickSilver into a paraboloid so it concentrates the sun rays and starts a fire (with a silver inner coating, of course.)  Another way of achieving this would be to make the button from flint so scratched against the steel tip makes sparks (better still: just spin the top on the button  8) ).

I might take a slightly different approach.  If I took the monobolo that Jorge left when he was in Miamisburg, I could have several different possibilities.  First of all, it is made of tough plastic.  I could use it time and time again to hit wild game for the dinner table.  I could also use the handsticks and cord to catch food in other unique ways.  The cord could also be used to wrap around a stick to get it to spin quickly for friction and fires.  It seems like I could even use the cup in the monobolo to mix food or churn butter!

ps......of course, if ta0 were on the same island with Figaro and I wasn't allowed to touch it, I could sneak by one morning and use that wood to start a nice fire.

I don't think I'd take a top at all.

As such I'd have crazy motivation to get the heck off the island and back to where my tops are!

Unless there was plenty of rum, might want to stay if I could make Pina Coladas...

I'd take just a carving knife with me....desert islands should have coconuts rite? :o

I'll just make coconut tops and weave string from the coconut fiber too.  ;D
