A really good video about the history of beigoma (and beyblade) and koma in general:
I love that it has the references he used at the end of the video and gives credits to the photos.

I was curious if the strummolo was an idea just used in this rendition or if it was an integral part of the play, so I looked for another version and found this modern one:

Re: Memoirs of a Peg-Top
The John Bewick print looks to illustrate a winter scene, skaters in the back ground and snow on the branches. I'm seeing whip tops on ice, what do you think?
You are correct. Whip tops are often played on ice. For example, for Native Americans whip tops were a winter sport and commonly played ...

Re: Memoirs of a Peg-Top
I believe Ludo gave me this top. I looks very similar to those peg-tops and I think it's from the early 1800s:

As it doesn't have a crown, the grooves on the tip side are very useful in wrapping the top from the tip up. It boomerangs well.

Re: Memoirs of a Peg-Top
I almost made a mistake and ordered a copy of this book that's on Ebay . The auction says that it was published and printed in 1790. But at the last second I realized it had to be a later edition, as it uses the standard letter "s" and not the old English "long s" that looks very similar to an "f ...

Re: Memoirs of a Peg-Top
I found out that the illustrator, Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), was a famous wood-engraver, so no wonder that the first edition of the book is expensive. Here is another book illustration by him, but with a whip top this time, from 1781 , from "Reading Made Very Easy and Diverting":
