Hand-Sweat Prevention
« on: August 22, 2010, 07:38:36 PM »

Well, with the Whirled Top Festival coming up, it is obviously going to be outdoors. For some reason, my hands sweat in 60 degree temperature, so it will definitely be worse in hotter temperature, and it is impossible for me to juggle. My dad told me a good way to keep your hands from sweating it to put chalk dust on them. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I used foot powder once and it worked on keeping my hands dry, but it also add an extra grip to the string making it easier for regens, but it was a bit hard on the wirewalkers.

Nylon glove(s) may help, or something like a yo-yo glove

Something I cannot testify to, but something that I've heard about... I've heard that some of the japanese yoyo players use spray antiperspirant on their hands.  I wouldn't necessarily recommend this, especially on a regular basis, but just thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.  Anyone else ever heard of, or tried, this?

Oh, and no amount of antiperspirant will stop humidity from making your hands sticky.  Gloves would be the only good solution for humidity.

i don't think it's a ball. it's one of those little sacks filled with powder like you find in bowling allies. I'm sure if there are any bowling allies with stores they should have them.

dunno what baseball players call it, but it's a talc bag or rosin bag.  I use one for disc golf, I've tried it for tops but I don't like it, it can make your hands feel drier, but still kinda... gummy.

yep, pitchers/bowlers use a rosin bag. rosin keeps your hands sticky so you can keep a grip on the ball (or whatever) and not recommended for yo-yos/tops. it's the same stuff band geeks put on the bows of their string instruments. it's basically resin from trees and plants and similar to sap. wouldn't want that on my hands.

talc (or talcum powder) would be alright...is the same stuff that they put in baby powder. baby powder may also contain corn starch. people who play billiards may be familiar with hand chalk (which is not actually chalk, but talc - real chalk is calcium carbonate and rock climbers/weightlifters/gymnasts use magnesium carbonate, which is close) which is used to keep hands dry. incidentally, billiard players also use billiard gloves instead of hand chalk, which some yo-yoers use.

i'm full of useless knowledge.

Way to go Sac!  Never knew there was a difference between rock climber chalk and billiard chalk.

Funny thing about useless knowledge...always seems to be room for more.

salut BMC ! (best medical crook?)

for sweaty hands there's an unbeatable trick
it's a gujarati posture (india) easy to perform

just sit , with your arms raised to a waist level position
then put the thumb nail in contact with the tip of your pinkies
press a little not too much just enough to feel your heartbeat
after 30 sec or so you should feel your heartbeat in both pinkies and the sweat starts to slow down.. then you concentrate a little for about 3 mn and the sweat will be gone , wash you hands after the process, and go straight to the stage  :D

I  have used baby power for years.  Keep some in my toy bag.  It is also a fun way to entertain kids when I put the top in their hand.   :D
