Made a metal stem top...spins 8+ minutes
« on: August 14, 2021, 08:58:33 PM »

Today I cast a metal stem top. I wasn't expecting much on the performance side since casting is not the most precise way to make a top. After a spin or two though, I clocked a time of 7 minutes! 8)

You can find a video of its 7-minute spin here: https://youtu.be/Y3GGTVBgjU0

If you are interested in how I made my top I made an Instructable guide here: https://www.instructables.com/Cast-a-Metal-Spinning-Top-That-Spins-for-7-Minutes/

Impressive! Is the stem 3D printed?

Seven minutes of spin is pretty good for a cast metal home-made top!  8)

Nicely done!
Thank you for the Instructable. I have always wanted to cast something in metal, but I have never got to do it.

Thank you! Yes, the stem is 3D printed in PLA.

Thanks! Hahaha, that what I was thinking when the top hit 4 minutes and it had plenty of spin left.

Thanks! Metal casting is a fun hobby, it's super satisfying seeing alloy melt :)

Welcome to the microscopic subgroup of endurance tops Joah!
As soon as you report a spin time of more than 10 minutes, we consider you a full member.
Next you need to get some device for measuring the starting and toppling speeds of your tops. ;)

Thanks ortwin! In college my little brother and I used to challenge each other to who could make the longest spinning LEGO top...he always won, now he's an engineer ;D
Hopefully the next version of this top will be able to achieve a 10 minute spin time. Just waiting on some ceramic bearings and working out some printer settings. There's devices that can do this! Do you have any suggestions on what I should get?

You've been holding out on me on all this time! Can we see some of those LEGO tops?
