How to get rid of moles with a spin top
« on: July 25, 2021, 04:14:18 AM »

Hello folks,

I have a problem : Ive got a mole problem. Good thing : I got a crazy idea that might work!
Today I looked at the mole heaps in my garden. And then it hit me.
Moles are sensitive to sound and movement. I thought about making a lot of noise.. with my top.
So I placed a board on one of the mole heaps and aimed at it with my heavy wooden top.
I think the heavier the top, the more vibrations it sent into the ground?

I'm going to repeat this a couple of days, or longer.  On Every new heap that shows up, I'm going to place the board and spin the top on it. Repeat this 4 or more times on 1 heap.

My uncle had the same problem with moles. If it works, I do it in his garden too  :D.
He is a funny man. Saying I should put an advertisement in the newspaper.
But people wil give me funny looks when I arrive with a top and a board   :D.

For now, I try this out.
I let you all know if the mole is gone.

Well, this is a spintop trick that it would have never occurred to me!  :o ;D

I did a little search and I was surprised that there is a product that works on a similar principle: a mole chasing windmill! It has 4 stars out for 5 on 51 reviews, so many people swear that it works.

Perhaps you need to attach a rod to the plate so it transmits the vibrations deeper. But certainly, you will have to spin a lot! I guess you could start top-battle mole-chasing parties: it could be a great success!  >:D

Haha! Thanks Ta0  ;D.
Yes, I need to spin a lot then. But no problem, I am home most of the time.
That windmill looks interesting. Here we used to place a rod into the ground, and placed a empty plastic water bottle on top, the opening down. When the wind blows, it makes a lot of noise and vibrations. But then it needs to be a windy day.
I see what I can do to get the vibrations deeper, thank you for the tip!

I thought about Ta0's idea to let the sound go deeper into the ground.
so I made this construction.  but because the edges are sharp, my top got some dings . just a bit paint off.
luckely it is my strong wooden top, Black Chaos, that top can handle a ding.
afterwards I put duct tape on the edges of the metal lid. and treated my top. nothing to worry about!
happy how it turned out! ;D

Very clever!  :D

It would be cool if you could hook up something like a top secret top so you wouldn't have to spin it more than once!  8)

Thank you Texture  :).
If that was possible yes, but I'm not a genius  :o.
I managed to get this to work, but I don't have any further ideas.

Hello folks,
Sorry to keep you all waiting!
My idea works, but I need to repeat it.
Because we had awful weather here, I couldn't throw a top and the moles are coming back...
I then just put some garlic into the ground. Opened up the heap and put it inside.
So, if I can repeat it several times a day, during the whole week, then it can work.
But the weather is not great... I took a week off from my volunteer workplace.
And this time, they give decent weather!  Almost the whole week! Perfect!
Time to prepare Black Chaos  :).  I also put something duct tape on the metal disk edges. It really cuts into the top.
But no worries, it's a sturdy wooden top  ;).
Have a great day everyone!
