Hello folks,

It's been a very long time since I was online on the  boards. There is a reason.
Im not that active any more with spin tops, not even with yo-yo s.
Maybe it's time to think about my other hobby's: harmonica,  drawing , reading,  etc. Just being me  :D
Not that spin tops were not my hobby , Just never suceeded a boomerang again. And I even tried many hours , I could not repeat it.
I want to follow my heart,  and you guys told me to enjoy the little things in life.
Maybe I will come back, but im not sure.
Thank you all for the amazing people you are  : ;)

Sorry to hear that Jolien.
I'm sure that with personal coaching you would have been successful, but if there is nobody around it's not possible.
You are in Belgium, aren't you? If you wanted to wait just a few months, at the beginning of February a large group of us will be a few kilometers from the border, at the Loon-Plage festival. If you came by, I'm sure we would hook you up again with the hobby. So, that's both a suggestion and a warning  ;)
Just follow your heart.

Hey, Jolien!

We have missed you around here.  Sorry to hear you are moving away top spinning.  Harmonica is great.  So are reading and drawing.  It is good to move around a bit, though.  Top spinning might offer you some more activity in the future.  We are here if you ever decide to join us again.  I am sure you can still learn to boomerang with the help of some videos and support from your friends around here.
Take care!!!

Peace, Mike Hout

Hey y'alls,

In all honestly I do understand you Jolien, there was this time where I actually didn't knew if I would ever get a consistent boomerang. I too have moved away since a bit from tops, I do still play rougly 15 min per day but not the usual a lot more than I used to. I have moved back to my original hobby which was guitar playing.

The most important thing is to have fun in our hobbies, what why we have them :)
Cheers y'alls.

I can't throw tops for now. I'm shooting bb pistols - it's fun. I have a lot of hobbies.
Life is good. I also love scuba diving and trick kites.

Hello all,
Thanks for the support  :)
You all are great folks.
I Recently started playing  again.  I won't give up!
Also  I promised my grandfather , who died last Sunday.
I promised it from my heart to his heart,  not through talking.
He would like it, carry on the hobby he has when he was young.
I can imagine he's smiling up there,  together with my grandmother,  who died this year too.
Wherever the path leads me, I know you all stand by my side.
Thank you all  :D

Yayyy, so now the question I have for you is, what is happening when you are trying to boomerang? Let's try to help you!!

I'm sorry about your grandfather. You obviously loved him.

As paxl said, tell us what your problems with the boomerang are, or even better, post a video (on a new thread).

Welcome back!

I didn't want to push for video because no one wants to show the mistakes.. that said, if he is open, I'd just setup a camera / phone and try 10 time or ish so that we can see what is going on... IE raw and unedited. When playing tetris more competitivly, that is something I'd do and then other can comment / give advices ( BTW, this is valid to anyone seeking advice I'd say ! )

Cheers

Hydrona, what a touching connection with your grandfather.  I am sorry you lost both of your grandparents this year but I am so fascinated with your wonderful memories with him.  I sure wish I had some memories like that from my grandparents.  You have inspired me to make even better connections with my grandchildren so they have good moments to look back on.  I will try my best to have playful fun with them and maybe get them to be top spinners.  There sure are a lot of tops out in the garage to help me get started with them!

Anyway, good luck with your top progress.  You can do it!!!

Thanks, I keep his photograph on my bookshelf  :)

The problem when I try boomerang,  is That the string winds up around the top,  snapping back to my hand.

Oh the evil string snag.  These can be hard to diagnose. Here are a few ideas on things to try.
* Throw more gently. Some tops are especially prone to snags when you throw hard.
* Wrap the crown of the top the other direction.
* Change the tension of the wind.  Try several combinations. More or less at the crown. More or less at the tip.
* Get a different string. String that is too stretchy should be avoided.  This one is important.
* Some wood top designs have a groove at the crown. (old Duncan tops)  The string gets jammed in the groove.  Try fat string.
* Have someone watch and/or slow mo video.   Watching Rachel I found that she was releasing the top before the throw was finished.  After she solved that, her string snags mostly disappeared.
= Don't get discouraged.  It can be pretty scary to have a 3 or 4 inch wood top coming back toward your head, but it can be overcome.

Besides Kirk great advice, consider the possibility that you are rushing and pulling too early, so the top cannot completely unwrap. Make a conscious effort to wait a fraction of a second longer before pulling and see if that helps. Good luck!

PS1: I edited the title to reflect the current mood!  ;)

PS2: Cecil, I ordered a Prism kite because of you! (but the model on the video is discontinued).
