US Nationals 2019 anybody?
« on: April 29, 2019, 11:22:58 PM »

The US National Yo-Yo contest takes place July 6th and 7th in Philadelphia. Who is interested in competing in spintops this year?
Last year we had a large group of players in Miamisburg. But I need to hear from some of you soon if we are going to have it together with the yo-yo contest. I should confirm soon with Thad if that's the case.
I believe Val and Dale would not go, but I could combine the trip with a visit to a sister who lives in Pennsylvania and be a judge.

In addition to trophies or medals, the winner gets to take home for 1 year the 10" national spintop and gets his/her name inscribed in a display in the national yo-yo museum in Chico. This is also a great opportunity to practice your routine for Worlds, if you can make it to both.

Do we have many players who live close to the Philadelphia area?

What happens with the East coast?  :-\
You do not get the opportunity of being the national champion of the big old USA everyday!  ;)
I haven't heard from Jose going, so it could be a great chance for others. We only need 3 contestants. Even just 2 (but that would force me to enter).

If I don't hear any commitments by the weekend, I don't think we will have a US national contest this year, after having a great one last year.  :(

Possibly canceling nationals?  Those are sad words to contemplate.  Wonder what Mark Hayward is doing that weekend?  John Buechele?  What about Dick Stohr shocking the world and striking a blow for us "older men?"  Kirk is east coast but, of course, farther south.  These are just a few thoughts off the top of my head.

After reading this post, I was thinking about trying to make a family run on the US Nationals Contest. The results would be Eli 1st, Shootist 2nd and Austen 3rd a new family dynasty at Nationals.  I guess one can dream.

I will have to check with the hotels in Philly to see if I can get a room.  If so, Eli will be able to compete at Nationals.

I don't know about Austen attending due to his job.

US Nationals 2019 in Atlanta?

Here is a crazy idea.
Only the Hickersons have shown interest in competing in Philly.
But they are in Alabama, next door to Georgia, and I see that Myk_Myk has a nice venue in Atlanta for hosting the yo-yo and spintop meets.
Kirk has competed before at nats . . . You see where my train of thoughts goes.
Nats in Atlanta? Is it possible? Of course, the big disadvantage is no exposure to the yo-yoing community. But could be more relaxed and fun.

(I'm throwing this out there, without consulting anybody beforehand. I'm flying out tomorrow morning and I wanted to check this idea that just occurred to me. When I come back in a week I need to finalize what we do with nats this year.)

I am in support of the Georgia idea but it is unlikely that I will be able to attend - I plan to go to Cleveland for Worlds and that will be my big trip for the year.

I'm about to board a plane out of the Atlanta airport, what is a good excuse to bump this thread.

What would be a good date to have it here? Any festivals?

I use to work in the shipyard in south Philly many years ago. i will miss not getting a Cheese Steak from Ginos, i won't miss the long drive, so Atlanta is a good choice.

Kirk last as usual.
Austen would probably be able to attend since the travel distance would be less.

It is a nice venue. I wonder if there are any available times.
Who else could possibly travel to Atlanta?

I just found this thread. Philly is about 3 or 4 hours from here so I should be good for a trip. Happy to judge again.

And then I looked at the hotel across the street at $334 per night. Then I thought about I-95 and the drive is 3+, 4, or 12 hours depending on traffic. There must be a better way.

Nice hotels near Myk_Myk's venue range from $105 for Home2 suites $139 for Homewood Suites down to $42.
All about 10 min drive to the venue.
The nicer ones are on GA141
