Rascals
« on: February 16, 2010, 03:13:56 PM »

I updated the Rascals page on the top wiki.  I still have to get back to it with photos once I find my rascals, but most of the info is there.

I'm not sure how to work on Wiki, but here is a picture of some of my Rascals.... I think I got them from Mark Hayward way back when.  If anyone is interested I have quite a few.  Only one in the package, so that is not available.  I will try to scan the instructions to post later?

You remembered correctly Don, you got them from me.  I made sure that the few collectors that I knew at that time got a good assortment of Rascals including the few that I had in the package.

I have been meaning to make one for a while now. I wasn't sure quite how. I figured it out today.

It is made from osage orange and spins very well. I didn't have one to copy from since Mark wouldn't let go of any of his. I just eye balled it.

If I were doing it,  I'd chuck the piece, hollow out the cone, shape the outside to match, and part off.  I'm sure Alan will let us know his method.

Mark..I seem to remember a video of you guys spinning a lot of these but I can't seem to find it (searching rascal turns up a lot of unrelated hits).  Do you have a link to that?

I turned the wood round and hollowed out the inside as Rob indicated. Then I made a jam chuck from some junk wood and turned a section to match the inside taper such that it would just fit without moving. Next I put the wood onto the jam chuck and held it in place with the tail stock. I turned the outside taper and sanded it except for the tip section so that it was still held by the tail stock. I wrapped masking tape around the wood to hold it to the jam chuck. The photo only shows a small piece of tape to show you how it is supposed to fit. Then I parted the tip section off and finished turning/sanding the tip. This is a similar technique for finishing the bottom of a bowl.

Thanks for the explanation and photo, Alan.  I was thinking that a "custom chuck" would be needed. Now that you have the setup you can probably easily make enough to play stacking  :)
