Strong Museum and tops!!!
« on: April 09, 2018, 11:53:00 PM »

It has kind of been sad to see the Strong Museum in Rochester miss their potentially great connections with spin tops and The Toycrafter.  But I was surfing around this evening and came across something I have not seen before.  Maybe others have seen it?  Maybe it has been discussed on this forum and I missed it.

The Strong Museum now has online collections on their website and I see some items from The Toycrafter.  Actually, I see a couple of tops there including a Duncan Twin Spin, a couple of classic wood peg tops and a dreidel from The Toycrafter with some information about his Rochester based business.  And there are loads and loads of yo-yos.  They go on and on and on and.....wait?  Is that a nude woman on that yo-yo?

The only sentence I could find about The Toycrafter was the following one:
Quote
The Toycrafter, a Rochester, New York, toy maker specializing in tops, produced this intricate wooden dreidel.
The article goes on to talk about dreidels.

However, it appears to have a great research toy library. I think when I return to Rochester I will spend a day there researching old catalogs.  :)

The tops in the collection can be seen with this search:

www.museumofplay.org/online-collections/search/index.php?q=spinning+top

There are many, but with very little specific info about the tops. Actually, most have the same general blurb about tops.
I like this example of the ink well top:

I don't think I'd seen this one on the card before:

The Hartman's Tuff Topp looks nice but, unfortunately, doesn't work very well.
