10" giant top testing
« on: September 13, 2016, 07:30:27 PM »

 Hey guys,
Check out the video of the big top my friend Virgil made for me.

The top is not completed yet, but I am playing it to make sure is balanced and working well before the finishing process.

Lots of people on this board would like to be his friend!

¡Congratulations!  8)

By the way, Figaro is 5 lb 8 oz (2.5 kg). The Nats trophy is 3 lb 7 oz if I recall correctly.

Very nice top. Is it bearing? I like my big top for about five throws, then I'm beat. I'm still working on the 7 7/8 pine top.

super big top Dave!! your friend is seasoned on the lathe !!

still , it needs a shaving : how about less than 3 lbs ?

for bearings : did you put the skateboard size ? double bearing ?

thanx again for the fun

I am hoping we will be able to do some sort or "re-mount" on the lathe to take off some of the weight. After some testing I think the wall thickness is about 1 inch......if I take that down 3/8 it would be considerably lighter weight!

The tip is interesting. It is done by a person who does not know what we have done the the top world in the past......so the prototype was unique in shape and design.
Right now it has two bearings. One on the inside of the top that is about 7/8 inch diameter, and the one down by the tip that is 1 1/2 inch diameter.
It is very straight, and very smooth! (I have not hit anything with it yet though)

When I get more time, and it is completely finished, I will write up a detailed post about it.

Almost. I just weighed it and it is 3 lb 14 oz (1.75 kg)
I don't think you can go much lighter on a 10" top without compromising its ability to withstand normal play.

It was made and donated by Alan Gray.
It is a great top and spins nicely, but currently needs some repaint job.

Rossie is 3 pounds and when you make it segmented it's like a spider web of glue. Glue is stronger than the wood. I made the top where I can put 5/8 bearings in it, but I want a stright tip for the balance and to see what it can do. When you go for the wire walkers and the stair way to heaven you see what kind of top and line you really have. I'm hoping l can do all the tricks with little Rossie.

Dave I am looking forward to seeing the big top after it has been re cut. The re cut will not be easy and you have a good chance of DOOM. To bad you cant find some professional TERMITES, to give you that 3/8 to 1/2 wall thickness. I'm trying to find a video of how they burn wood on the lathe? The flower pot for my daughter is all glued up - soon it will be on the lathe - I hope.

Cecil, there is no reason to expect DOOM when hollowing on the lathe. There are rigs that use a laser to show exactly how thick the wall is. Even without one of those you can go slow and methodical with calibers to do what you want.

Dick, I just read what you said about thickness. The measuring is no problem it's the tool grab that scares me. My 3 3/4 zebra top came back and hit me in the face - and scared me. AND HURT.

very nice 10 inch top.  I would be more inclined not making it thinner.  The thinner, the less strength.  That is to nice to have split.
