hi all
during the christmas break we worked on this project with Ludo
it's a very simple and efficient set-up, copied from a top I had for a long time

the only difficulty is to find a very thin but also very stiff metal wire
we ended by using a piano wire

I don't recall "buttons with tips" like yours, but now I will be on the look out for one ("excuse me madam, may I borrow one of the buttons of your blouse for an experiment?"

Duncan Twister?
never heard of that

it was a top from germany
with a very long metal wire,and a tiny wood button full of holes
maybe to blow air once it was started i dunno
 the brass tip was very pointy and the top would not spin very long due to a general mistake in the proportions
but the metal wire for a launcher was really interesting

we had fun testing various buttons and "tips" and dremel holes in many buttons and beer caps,finally the "gem stickers" did the job for tips
a lot of contact
the  important part is the wire

Very Nice.  I am guessing that you used the dremel to make the holes have an angle for easy release.  True?  This looks like a great parent and child project.  (or adult top fan project )

here is the photo of the german top
it's quite "arty", and was purchased some years ago by a friend

I filmed a video
but it doesn't bring more information about the twisting of the wire

do you think this launcher dates back from a long time ago  >?
certainly the 19th century, but i don't recall such a launcher at Cyril's..

I cannot recall a similar top. I would guess it is a 19th century but it could be older.

These are not easy to find. I was lucky that I once got on Ebay a lot of five. I traded or gave away the rest (one of them is on display at the Chico Yo-Yo Museum). If I recall correctly, they were red, blue and perhaps green. The Yo-Yo Man with the square nose was introduced in 1947 and used throughout the 1950's, so it must be from that time.

I did a trade with Jorge years
ago for 2 of them. I gave one
to the National yoyo museum
and kept the blue one.
