Report from Miamisburg
« on: August 22, 2015, 12:38:43 AM »

It was a big first day at the Whirled To Fest. 12 of us hung out at the physics building in Cincinnati and talked about, played with, and learned how to make tops. It was really fun.

For those of you who don't know, here's a little lesson from Eli and Austin Hickerson on how to make a top:

Pictured left to right: David, Marcus Perry, Don (mailman), John Marcus, Eli, Austin.

And here's John explaining the roto-molder right before we pulled a hot fresh top out of the mold.

To go along with the creation, we also had a top casualty. See if you can tell which brother broke John's only giant top.

I have trouble posting images here with my phone, I will fix them as soon as I can.

EDIT admin: Flickr does not allow anymore (well, it hasn't for a long time but it was easy to get around) to post direct links to the images. It wants to force you to got to their website. I have copied the actual urls from the source code, but I don't know if it is going to work.

Great photos! I wish I was there!

Is Joe the tall guy? I see a couple of faces I don't recognize.

I think the big brother broke it. He shouldn't use a hammer on tops  :P

What a great day, yesterday!  John Marcus is a fabulous host, and we all very much enjoyed the tour at the university.  Never before have I seen so many tops all in one place!  Everywhere you look there are tops, in every nook and cranny!  Thank you, so much, John!!

Not only were they there for us to see, but he even let us play with them.  I threw a 4 inch top for the first time, and immediately got hooked.

Today we head into town for the festival, and I'm looking forward to a full day of top spinning, and a visit to the spin top Hall of Fame.

Enough for now.  It's time to meet David for breakfast.  Wish you all could be here!

It is nearly one o'clock and the front yard of the church looks like something I never could have imagined.  I count 14 people here and tops of all shapes and sizes everywhere.  I am amazed.  I have received the tops from Don Olney and Larry D.  Thanks!  They are awesome.

JNeff is going full blast bringing item after item out of his bag.  The stories are flowing.  I am sitting behind Joe Mauk and looking at his top scar.  Whew.....this has to be the most serious top scar ever!

Anyway, all is going well and we are anxious to share more.

I don't think anybody saw this coming (he says quite sarcastically) but some people are really getting into the big whip tops!

On my way to a juggling gig, wish I was there instead.  I'll spin a big top for the fest.  ;)

The sound of incredibly loud whip cracking coming from the church basement was pretty alarming.
