Yesterday I watched with my wife a horror film in black and white from 1954, The Mad Magician.
One of the opening scenes shows the stage of a vaudeville show, including someone doing simple two hand yo-yo looping!
I could not find any photos online, but I imagine this is well known among yo-yo collectors.

The story takes place around the turn of the century, or before, as there are no cars in the streets of the city, only carriages pulled by horses. Also, fingerprinting was a new thing not yet widely used by police. So I guess looping would have been an amazing skill at the time, except that I am not sure two handed yo–yo looping had already been invented  :-\

I read the movie was in 3D and the yo-yo scene in particular (I imagine with blue-red glasses, so there was some color after all). I also read that it was the first 3D movie ever to be broadcasted by TV.

Hmmm.  The "Mad Magician?"  Something else I need to read more about!!!

Actually, this sounds like something I would have watched when I was in elementary/junior high age.  On Friday nights they had this late night show called "Thriller Theater".  They showed two movies starting at 11:30 pm and they used to scare us out of our wits.  I probably saw this sometime back in the mid 60's.

Thanks John!

Youtube is not showing the 3D setting options anymore when using the default html5 player (nor does it show the left and right in the correct aspect ratio). To go back to the flash player and be able to select the 3D viewing mode (e.g., red/blue anaglyph, interlaced, crossed-eye, etc)., try this URL:

and click on the gear icon for settings after you start playing it.

I wonder if the yoyoer is a known demonstrator.

Mike: you should remember Eva Gabor  ;)

Yes, I remember Eva Gabor quite well.

I asked Dale and he did not recognize him. But he said: "Could have been one of the Kelly brothers."

I watched it with red/cyan glasses and the 3D effect is quite good.

Surely you jest. Vincent Price is an American icon of villiany and horror. Please enjoy him as much as we did.
