Finally somebody does the experiment!  :)

Now, he selected a top with a lot of air drag. I would like to see the experiment with a smooth top.

I suspect that for the shape of the tops we play, air drag starts to be the limiting factor at around a size of 6" to 10": you don't gain much spin time for going bigger.  On the other hand, a top shaped like a disk can be much larger and spin much longer.

If Joe could put his giant top inside a bell jar . . .

A couple of months ago, Mark and I were playing with a Lambda top (aluminum core, brass rim, instrument grade ruby spherical tip) and Mark got a 13+ minute spin........I wonder what it would do in a vacuum!  Based on the ratio in the test, we're talking close to 2 hours!

The Lambda tops were a Kickstarter project early last year, I bought 2, I think some of you may also have bought them.....

don't be surprised this is synthetic ruby, a very affordable material for small pieces
it's used in jewelry,,more info here,
