Top Turner Corner ///// 2

dear all

the project of turning tops with a Stakanovist approach is doing good
not that i try to beat a record , just to get really used to the various tools and gestures and order of actions
i stick to the grooved shape with burnings as long as i work from scratch,... from wood of unknown origins
as far as spinning , guess what : they all dance ok on the floor, the round tips being very naughty, and when i throw in a wooden drawer ,they bump like crazy
i don't know yet what will come up next week as far as wood finds ...i'll do a bike tour tonite because it's sunday and people throw things that day
in addition i found 3 new old tools at 2 euros each, c'est pas la ruine !

the whole production so far

salut la compagnie !!

Good work, Jim!  What would you say you've learned with that run of tops?

good question!!

learnt many little things but the most important ones

++++ firm hand and sharp tool : don't hesitate to move the tool holder from one position to another many times ,even if it loses time because , when you have the right position, the right angle of attack for the blade , it's so smooth and  easier , in addition with a sharp blade you can really just "caress" the wood and obtain really fine shavings
++++ the turning part is the most fun , but the finishing takes as much time if not more (especially for the tip)
++++ make sure the chuck is firmly held between your points before roughing and wear glasses during that part : the clips are sometimes harmful
++++ don't work with people around you

for the next batch i plan to start using acrylic paint

now to come back to earth , it's really no big deal starting turning tops , if you have a little time ahead (3H minimum) , and the basic material and know-how , : just DO it  ;)

Jim,

I have a quart of 60's Duncan tips which work great on small tops.  I am willing to sell some. :)
