« on: October 23, 2009, 03:24:25 PM »

hi folks
last week end i saw the classic "pistol top" in an antique shop here in Paris
it was shiny , in good condition ,but  far beyond my budget

here is the photo of the same top from Ed Levin's book

by the way , it would be a must-have for our fellow Gunhawk , wouldn't it ?  :D :D

How much were they asking? The one I saw on Ebay years ago went for $1,100 usd. It may actually be the one I "shot" chez Cyril (he told me so)! I think I will have to be content with the little plastic rubber-band pistol made in China that spins a top . . .

How does that top work?  Is there a spring in the barrel that the top fits into?  Is the hammer of the pistol also spring-loaded?

It looks like it works like the old Gibbs tops where you wind the wooden mechanism that fits onto the medal spindle of the top and then push the button at the top of the winding thingy.  Only this time it looks like the hammer of the gun is the button?   Ta0...Jim?

You are correct, csam. In addition a cap should be placed in a receptacle in the face of the hammer so it explodes at the same time the top is released. Unfortunately, Cyril did not provide the caps  :(

The US patent is number 202,742 from 1878 by Carl Mohr of Massachusetts.

LOL. Yeah!  It *is* an interesting artifact.  It looks like it would have been pretty expensive, so I wonder if it was some sort of curio for adults or if children actually played with it.  Considering the way it worked it might have been the first Rip-Cord.

Looking at that top again I was reminded that I have a top that looks very much like this pistol top.  The tip on mine is a bit shorter and not pointy and the square holes for sound are spaced a little farther apart but otherwise it's very similar. the top of my top reads: Germany and in larger letters...IMPROVED MECHANICAL SPRING TOY.   I got this top in a group of 3-4 other tops that were wooden from e-bay a few years back.   It didn't come with the a winding mechanism so I have no idea what it looked like.  I always assumed it worked something like a Gibbs top, but I thought it curious that the spindle on this particular top is t shaped, unlike my other spring wound tops.  I always figured that this was an older top, but now I'm wondering just how old.  I'll try and get a few photos of it.

2 photos of the top in my flicker account:

The one that sold on ebay said The Royal Pistol and must have been an expensive toy.

It has that US patent markings so it was American made. But I suspect many of these early US patents were actually European products re-patented by US entrepreneurs (something like what China does now).

Guau! It`s very beautiful that ancient pistol-top. I know why is so expensive, too.
In what year were they fabricated, Ta0, JIm?

I `ll try to find one of those in the markets of chacharas.

Talk about AOW, this puppy is only 5 1/2 inches long. LOL  It does take "battle tops" to the next level though.  Next up,  a top shooting gun with a telescopic sight.
