Life Magazine Article from 1955
« on: October 22, 2009, 12:09:32 PM »

There are some photos in an article of Life on tops spinning at Daggett Elementary School in Daggett, CA.  To find them go to google images and type "spinning top source:life" the click search and viola!  I tried some other strings but didn't find anything on tops.  Jugglers will find some cool photos by typing "juggle source:life" and look at the second result for "diabolo source:life".

Great find Zeemo, thanks!
Attention: this is not the 1945 Life article but a completely different one!
I had already found the first picture, but not the rest.

Thanks Jim,
Try typing in :yo-yo source:life".  Nice photo's here from Kansas City.  I wonder I Chris recognizes any of the locations.

Freakin Awesome find Zeemo!!!   Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention.  I had only seen that first photo, the one taken in Germany.  I had no idea that it was taken in the 60's.  I thought that was a boy and was taken in the early 1900's  :D   I'm from CA and had never heard of Daggett CA.  Wiki says that it has a population of 200 ;)   I love everything about these photos, the clothes, the haircuts, the classroom, the cowboy hat, that CAKE.   Now I want a spin-top cake!

I'm going to use a bunch of these photos for my schools spin-top contest poster.   The kids (and adults) will get a kick out of it.

Guys, wait till you see the ITSD video....this was the flavor that I was going for.  I even considered making all of the photos B&W, but instead just went with the music of this era.

Thanks again Zeemo.   These photos made my day.

Just a note about using google for searching for images.  If you just type "yo-yo", only 5 pictures end up in the results.  If you type "yo-yos: you get 200 images.  There are two different photo shoots in these results.  One does not have a date but it looks like early 50's if you look at the cars in some of the pix.  The other is from 1961 and is about the Duncan Yo-Yo factory in Luck Wisc.  The photographers are different.  Bob Rule told me he remembers this and probably can supply more info.  To See more on the factory go here.

Cool stuff, Zeemo!  Am I the Chris you're referring too?  I'm assuming we have met and my infamously terrible memory i failing me once again.  Did we meet at Air Traffic, by chance?  I didn't recognize anything in the KC photos, not much context, and I was only there for a few years in the late 90's.

Hi Chris,
I met you at Jugglefest in Columbia Mo. circa 1995.  You brought some kids with you that I assumed you had been  teaching yo-yos and spins tops tricks.  They performed in the public show.  Very Kewl.  I remembered you were from KC and thought you might recognize some the backgrounds in the pix.  But that was in the 50's and I am sure it was quite different 40 years later.  Hope you liked a walk down memory lane!  I know I did.

I wish my elementary school was like this. I bet it is for SpinQueen!

"I know how to spin my top
Round and round and round.
And when it stops I pick it up
And throw it out again."

Is this what it says on the board?  I can't quite make it out with my computer...
"I know how to spin my top
Round and round and round.
And when it stops I pick it up
And throw it out again."

I cannot believe how many pictures there are of top spinning.  Terrific find!  And yes, SpinQueen, now I know what to ask for on my birthday cake.

I remember a Zeemo from IJA festivals.  Is that you?  I was at a bunch of them in the 90's and a few more in the last eight years.

Those are fantastic pictures! I guess these are directly from the Life archives but were never used in the magazine. Obviously they wouldn't have used all the pictures, but probably none made it to print. I did a search for Daggett Elementary on Life using google books and could not find it.

The "spintop class" is so wonderful.  Yes, Mike that is what the center poster says. The third one seems to start with: "I can do tricks"  ;D  You can click  "view full size" below and to the right of the pictures to see a larger one that can be read.

I love the way the kids are sitting at attention and working so hard to learn the way of the spinning top!

Congratulations to Jim.  I see he is now over 100 posts!!!

Zeemo was a big wig in the IJA.  Even served on the board several times, if I remember correctly.

What got you into top spinning.  I see you live just a little bit north of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It wouldn't take you too long to come down and spin the giants at University of Cincinnati!  Or, there are times when I drive up that way for vacation and other things.  What kind of spinning are you doing?  Things for your act?  Want to join us at worlds or a local festival sometime?

I love the picture of the girl from East Germany playing with a whip top!  I've never seen a picture of that, or even seen anyone who did it well!

The East German photo reminds me of a Jewish woman from our area (in her 70's or 80's) who told me about throwing tops and whipping them across town back in the "old country" (Germany).  Wonder if she knows the person in that picture?  Wonder if that is her in the picture!

Zeemo, you should come out to MadFest this year and see if you can whup some butt in the Battletop Contest.  There are a few whippersnappers who could use a good old-fashioned trouncing.  (Mostly I'm thinking of Mike if he comes this year.)
