Thank you TOP PEOPLE for helping me feel very welcome. I had been calling myself the top man; here I can not do so, we are all top people. It was lonely at the top, but now there are all of you and you have invited me in and I'm grateful. You've been there all along and I didn't know.

Here are URLs to videos of my paperclip tops and magnetically assisted top. Also, there are, what I believe to be the world's smallest handmade, handspun tops in the world. Your wire tops are fantastic!
I have made some paper clip tops after reading about Prof. Sakai's analysis (which you mention) but you took it to another lever.

As far as I know those are in fact the smallest handmade tops.

Welcome, Raymond!  Yes, this is a pretty special place.  Sometimes I forget how special it is then I roam around other places on the Internet and am reminded very quickly how good we have it here.

Your small tops are pretty small.  I don't see anyone beating you.  Your finger tops look familiar and it seems like I tried something like that but on a much much more crude level.

Welcome Raymond, those are some kinda small tops.  Thanks for posting both those and your magnetically assisted tops.  I imagine each 'top holder' takes some fain amount of trial and error to get the height adjusted to that sweet spot.  Are plans for that apparatus forthcoming also?

Your magnet above the top is a fantastic idea.  I couldn't help but think of Joe M and his monster top.  It could be adapted to this with a big enough magnet.  How about it Joe?  Just a thought.

I would be very interested if you posted videos or instructions showing how you bend and make your different variations on the paper clip tops.  The only one I have made is the simple Sakai top.

it is very inspiring
i'm fond of low-tech , recycling or distracting objects from their original use

in the 2nd vid with the super small top you say there's some static electricity in the air : i was wondering if it could be your body which generates it

have you tried your tops in a magnetic field ?


besides that i have immediately bent a few paper clips , with a V shaped tip  and low rider silhouette : the surface on which you spin is super important
these go über smooth on marble or glass, rather clumsy on wood or plastic

your VDO's are cool but you could show your face as well

The static I mentioned was on the plastic surface of the box I was spinning the top in. Particularly that one made out of a pen spring, with its wide, thin flywheel. It simply affected the spin a little.

i use pliers to make mine, what do you use?

I have been using a cuticle clipper (they look like toenail clippers but the blade curves outward), which I dulled with some emery clothe, making the blade into a very thing set of pliers. This I use on paperclips, but thicker wire stock needs heavier duty tools. The large top in my video was made using channel locks and a bench vice. A machine shop would have expert tools for anything larger.
