So I Made a TOP
« on: December 21, 2012, 04:19:29 PM »

I got the lathe up and going and picked up some wood to play with. I've been trying to learn how to use the tools and I'm starting to figure them out.

I did manage to make a little top. Check it out.

Here it is with a quarter so you can judge the size. (It's pretty small) :D
The string used is a Neff string piece. I don't use a full length so I had some short pieces that worked really well.

Yes, it does spin though I haven't been able to boomerang it yet. Here it is spinning.

I was pleased that my top worked as well as it has for my first try.  ;D
The information on the board helped out a lot. Thanks!

Outstanding first go!  Keep at it, it gets more fun and very rewarding.  Many good resources for instruction on how to use the tools.  If you are near a Woodcraft store they can be a big help, but the best source is a local woodturning club.  The clubs I am aware of are very caring and supportive, especially of beginners.  AAW (American Association of Woodturners) web site Woodturner.org list clubs.  Most of all keep it FUN!

Excellent Sam!
Good things come in small packages, and that looks real good to me!

Great first top!

To boomerang, wrap it so the string reaches about the same relative height on the body than with a normal plastic top.  But throw with less force forward and pull back harder to get it back to your hand.

Now that you are turning tops, you are hooked for life!  ;D

Thanks guys, I am having a lot of fun so far. Thanks for the encouragement.
I saw that there was a local wood turners group is a town about 15 mins from my house. I'll have to call up the leader and find out about meeting times ect.

I had some things to take care of today so I didn't get to do anything in the shop. But tomorrow I hope to play some more.

Maybe if you put a boomerang in you pocket you would do a boomerang that's how I did my first one
