First try
« on: May 27, 2012, 05:06:18 PM »

Hello All,
Well I got out into the garage for a bit this morning and here is the result of my first attempt at turning a top. Not too fancy, just a basic top.
It is made of Poplar with no real finish, just a little linseed oil. It has a few bumps and bruises from my attempts at throwing. I was not faring very well at first but discovered that I was winding the string wrong. Changed it up and did much better. Anyway comments and critiques or advise are always welcome.

Very nice!

Tops for string trick play generally have a smooth transition from body to tip--no ridges.  Not so important quite yet...

From my experience, I would suggest height and width the same or close.  You might check this form to see how others have made them.   :P

hello !
nice shape ! the only pointer i can think of is near the metal tip:
because it already has a groove , you should skip the wood groove visible on your top..it's the risk of tangle which is concerned
do you turn btw points or with a chuck ?do you drill with a drill press?

good first try , how does it spin ? any wobble ?

cheers

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice.
Jim, I see what you are saying about the string groove that I put in there. Being new to this I did not realize the string groove was part of the tip. Now I know. Thanks for that. Also, it spins OK, maybe a little wobble but that could be because I do not know how to throw very well yet.
czyoyo, I did not make the tip. I purchased them from a company called Turnertoys. They where 5 for 7.99 ( http://turnertoys.com/spinning_tops )
Wattstops, Thanks for the heads up on size. That helps quite a bit.

Turner toys sells metal tips?

Earl,
Yes they do. Follow the link, then go to "Spinning Toys" then "Spinning Tops" and they are in the center row about 3/4 down the page. Took mine about 3 days to get here. Good service.

Well after all of the sound advice that I got in this post I took the first try top back to the lathe and took the extra string groove off and shortened it a bit. It does seem to spin a bit better now. Thanks to all for the help.
I have also started on try numbers 2 and 3. Pictures coming soon.

Yeah, the top looks more trick-able now.

Looks a lot like Spintastics tips.
In fact, they are. Turner Toys has been selling Spintastics tops for a couple of years.
